Those of you who use the IRC either occasionally or regularly will know we've had a lot of problems with the room. These include....

only short nicks allowed, no services (nickserv, chanserv), due to this we lost control of the room, no ircops willing to help with problems, many members constantly spammed with rubbish via PM, this all due to undernet's warez status.....

Well, I have a solution. I have had discussions with some friends who run a private network, and they have agreed to let us put the channel over there. I am in the process of setting the channel up properly, and will be conducting some tests with a few members over the next couple of days. If this all goes well, then hopefully everyone will welcome the changeover.

Here are some preliminary bits of info you will need... pretty useless now but knowing it in advance helps. I won't release the details of the network publically until its all ready.

    INFORMATION

Firstly, you may want to stay on another server, for example Undernet. Using the later versions of mIRC, this is easy. Simply click on the Options button (the symbol of a hammer and folder) or press ALT+E. The options box will pop up. Under Servers, select the second network you wish to join, and tick New Server Window. Now hit Connect To Server - voila!

    IMPORTANT

These steps MUST be followed when you get on the new network.

    1. When you connect, make sure you have your chosen nick. type the following:

    /nick mynick

(where [mynick] is your name... I suggest using board name so we know who you are!)

    2. Type in the following:

    /msg nickserv register password email

(replace password with your chosen password, and replace email with a valid email address. This is needed in case you forget your password)

    3. You should now have your nick registered, so you can join chat.

Once you are in the channel, you will be assigned voice or op as appropriate. I will be adding people to the autoop and autovoice list, so as long as you remember to identify whenever you connect, you will be opped/voiced appropriately.

I will make a little tutorial for everyone to read, so don't worry if its all confusing! There will also be people around who can help.

There are some things to remember:

Ops have special privileges, which can be abused. It is a position of trust. If you are assigned an op, congratulations! It is because you are trusted and it is believed you will do your best to assist people in the channel. The most important thing to remember... DO NOT op people for the sake of it... if they are autovoiced it is for a reason. If they haven't been autovoiced/opped yet, give them +v for now.

I don't want anyone to feel that they are being treated unfairly or controlled here... all this is just a security thing so we don't have any problems. Talking of which, the ircops on this network are friendly, approachable people. Feel free to ask them for assistance should you have a problem, and it is quite likely that they may pop in from time to time and join in the discussion :) Things will be just the same as before... only with some improvements! Oh, and there may be some hidden surprises I'll let you discover ;)

This seems like a lot of extra work. Tell me again what's wrong with EFNet, the network where most of us already are?

Come into the normal channel and I'll tell you - just testing it with a bunch of people first ;)

    efnet.vuurwerk.nl
    irc.easynews.com
    irc.efnet.pl
    irc.servercentral.net

Paulo nobody has talked to assembler.

I e-mail him and leave him private messages and he never responds. I've pretty much given up with him.

You would have thought that when someone offers something for sale, and you reply to his thread first, he would have got back to you. You would have thought that after he apologises for being busy, he would also have mentioned the sale. You would have thought that PMing him again to remind him you're interested would have jogged his memory... AND e-mailing him. But no, I've heard nothing from Kevin.

In fact, he's NEVER replied to my e-mails or PMs... including when he said e-mail me if you want to be part of the test of the new forum... I was offering him advice on the PHP, and as a thank you.... I don't get asked to help test. Mm, nice.

oh and by the way, read the PINNED irc note... it says the OFFICIAL channel is on undernet, so what's all this EFNET bollocks?

THAT is an unofficial change which noone moans about.

Nice to know you're all so fucking ungrateful. I spent all this time and effort to change to a nice service, with LOTS of improvements which make it more pleasant for everyone, and I get no thanks, just moaning.

    Oh dear, quakenet

PC gamer's channel... zero hope of getting your name unless it has a unique clan tag before it. No nickserv.

Legit, why haven't you come over to Tera yet?

Nickserv isn't needed - just choose a unique nickname or get a BNC. Chanserv isn't needed - Efnet now has Chanfix which'll solve most channel problems otherwise you can just get a bot.

I'm always on Efnet. I'd rather be on any of the 6 big networks rather than a small private one anyhow.

As the rebel voice of dissent on retro's server choices, and the leading cause of an EFNet revolt, I feel I should apologize first of all for kicking the chair out from under retro's feet, and maybe explain my motives.

EFNet's the biggest network. It's the oldest network. It's where most of us probably already are. The key to getting participation in an IRC channel is to be where the people are, and if that's EFNet then... That's where the channel should be.

Other servers with more features and/or security are nice, but if it becomes a hassle then people won't continue to make an effort to go there for long.

No offense to you retro, of course, but your beautiful smile and charming wit aren't enough for me at least to make that jump. =)

As a hardcore gamer,i do not limit myself to consoles games! I have much fun onPC games and many clans and communities (and Prolific games who I code for) frequently haunt the QuakeNet servers

Can't be bothered 99.9% of the time joining multiple IRC networks :smt019

I want you to know that I really appreciate every effort into keeping the IRC channel alive :smt023
Too bad I hardly have time to frequent it nowadays...

I really appreciate the fact that you are arranging stuff on that private network and I will check it out. Altough it think it's easier to open a channel on a poplar network like Efnet. (almost) Everyone who uses IRC is probably already on Efnet since it is the biggest network around. Anyway.. we have 3 #assemblerirc channels now :smt043
