I cant believe how popular these classifieds are, I mean they look like straight out of 96' internet.

So my question: is craiglist popular outside of the US too? or there are clones in every country?

It's not a classifieds site, but 2ch has basically rendered any other web forum useless. Japanese apparently love their text only, anonymous bulletin boards. Ugly as shit, non-centrally archived, etc.

I didn't realise Craigslist existed in the UK until Pikkon pointed it out last week. Had a look and... my verdict is that it's not very popular in my local area. There was bugger all available in anything.

I've heard of it before, but what exactly IS it?

Is it like a combination of Ebay, dating sites, and myspace all crammed into one site?

Eeh? I posted in this thread but now it's gone. Anyway, I wanted to know why on earth is it called Craiglist? Sounds like a really stupid name to me. Was the person who started it called Craig?

As a matter yes, it was started by a Craig.

Think of it like free online classifed ads that you would usually see in the daily paper.

It's been used for everything from Apt rentals to free stuff to dope and hookers.

Gumtree seems to be semi-popular here, in Poland and a bunch of other countries.

Seems to be something similar to "blocket" here in sweden (I think :p).

Anyway, no it's not popular here afaik, not even eBay is that popular in Sweden. They tried making a ebay.se site but none used it as we already had other auction sites, so it ended with them buying up one of the swedish auction sites called tradera.

    Practically nobody's using it here.

Ebay isn't popualar here either by the way. They all use "marktplaats.nl".

    Yep, Craig Icantrememberthelastname

Whats incredible is that the guy made millions out of the site. How? I've no idea...

Another thing I cant understand is why is becoming so popular as of late, seeing it has been on the internet for years.

Craigslist is great for getting rid of crap you own without going through eBay/PayPal/shipping fees or yard sales, where you may end up selling items at less than 10% of what you paid, as well as finding some stuff cheap. Most deals are done locally (I hope), as I've used it to sell a PSP at a much better price than if I sold it through the Marketplace or eBay. I know of some folks who have also used it to buy items (used guitars, amps, etc).

It's very easy to spot a scam through craigslist, but dont give out too much personal info when going through deals and you should be fine.

Though, with increasing gas prices, I'm not so sure you're saving much again.

Its kinda informal no doubt about it, whats weird is that is more mainstream nowadays than it ever was, much more than when it started in 1995 back when the internet wasnt that big at all and it had little or no competition.

As far as I know they only charge for jobs ads, yet they're making quite some money, around $150m I think.

Well shipping is/will be going up too
