Thought I'd share something I had never seen before I bought it: Functions the same as a IS Famicom "Wideboy" except the Game Boy hardware/connector is absent. Instead, it connects to an actual Game Boy via DB9 connector. This cable carries the LCD information which is translated into tiles for the FC, and the audio which is directly travels into the Famicom through the audio in connector pin. If you turn off the FC, the GB's sound will still come through. I'm not sure if the device has any special features as I'm missing my AV Famicom controller and am too lazy to hook up my RF Famicom. The image on the Famicom is static, you can remove the DB9 and reinsert it, the system will automagically update the screen. The actual hardware used is pretty complex. There is a BIOS, multiple PALs, a PALCE or two, SRAM and a ton of discretes, it's not getting copied by me The unit is very similar to the instore kiosks since the "DMG TV Monitor" affects the Game Boy in no way, and those kiosks used to display on both the monitor and Game Boy. Not sure why IS would make such a unit if it weren't for the development process though, I hope it's not just an ordinary store kiosk thing.
By the way, it's actually a DMG TV MONITOR (B), so far I know that this and the so called original "Wideboy" (revision 2) exist. Both of their names suggest that there are predecessors but haven't been discovered online. I know that there are at least 2 of those Wideboys (rev. 2) leaked as they appeared on eBay. I know one of them ended up going to Chris Covell since he reviewed it on his awesome new site Edit: I've come to the conclusion that this was released prior to the Wideboy as the "Wideboy 2" clearly has my device's with the built in GB is tacked onto the edge. However the device came with a GB pocket, which was released pretty late.
I remember Chris bought 2 from ebay but sold 1... On his site it says his board is called: "DMG DEB (B)" And you say yours is called: "DMG TV MONITOR (B)" The one I have is called: "WIDE BOY-3 (B)" Shiggsy
So B obviously doesn't refer to the revision as they all have (B) Got pics of your Wide Boy 3? Does it have an onboard GB?
I don't think so? You have pics of the two together but thats Chris' pic, no? Got any more info on that IS Famicom? I'd love one of those.
Kyuusaku. I found some old pic on my harddrive of the famicom wideboy...unfortunately there are no pics of the "inside" of the unit. Ill try to get some pics of that next week. fam-wb01.jpg fam-wb02.jpg fam-wb03.jpg fam-wb04.jpg fam-wb05.jpg fam-wb06.jpg Shiggsy
Do you know what the DB25 is for? Chris doesn't have that does he? I think you have the nicest/latest model. It's also laid out differently I believe.
Kyuusaku....sorry it took a few days to reply. I have taken a few pictures of the wideboy now... http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/fam-wideboy02.jpg http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/fam-wideboy03.jpg http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/fam-wideboy07.jpg Shiggsy
Nice but the DB25 is just to use GB as a controller? x_X Too bad it's not a debugger or something awesome.
