Is it possible to backlight the Game Boy while keeping the "pea soup" colored screen?

Hi guys! Bit of a weird question, but I've recently picked up a Game Boy and I'm thinking I'll install a backlighting mod on it. However, the guides I've seen result in the console losing it's characteristic "pea soup" colored display, so I was wondering if it's possible to install one of these kits without losing the color. Part of the installation process is removing two films from the screen, one of which appears to be a green film. If you didn't remove this film, would this this do what I'm looking for?

Also, what backlighting kit do you all recommend?

    Thanks!

I think the only way is to use front lighting, like the old Afterburner mod for GBA. Backlighting removes the reflective film on the back of the LCD and doing it that way also loses the coloring a bit.

I think the GBA had that clip-on overhead light, maybe you could rig something like that? Just a thought.

Hmmm, do they make any frontlighting kits for the GB? I can only find backlighting ones.

Possibly by the colour of LED. It won't be exactly the same though.

Yeah, they make a green backlight, but it's a very neon green color.

I saw a mod today where a guy had front lit a Game Boy Color by taking the front light from a Game Boy Advance SP and installing it into the console. Do you think this would also work in the original Game Boy? Or hell, just rigging up some LED strips?

I bought a green led frontlight for my Gameboy Pocket.

I found mine on Ebay but there are several places that sell them online.

    .
I frontlit my GB color with a broken SP. It's not difficult at all, but GBSPs are more expensive (even broken) than it's worth.

More importantly, it's not even actually the light that you want out of the SP. It's the optical diffuser panel that the LED shines through. Yes, technically you can just line your screen with LEDs, but there are a few reasons that is not practical, battery life and the uneven lighting of LEDs are the biggest. The diffuser panel in an SP allows even lighting across the entire screen with only 1 LED needed.

Optical diffusers are not cheap. I have yet to find material cheap enough to make frontlighting worth it after I used up the SP parts I already had lying around.

    What about something like this?
    http://www.aliexpress.com/store/406029

Seems perfect, though I'm not sure if it will fit into the OG Game Boy without any case modding.

*EDIT* Seems the panel isn't very clear. What's the point?!

*EDIT AGAIN* I've been reading online and a few guides mention it's possible to install a backlight while leaving the green polarizing layer in place. This would give the screen that chararastic puke-green tinge, but would leaving the polarizing layer mess up the backlight?

This isn't what your looking for, but I'll share anyways; I installed an el panel in my DMG from Kitsch-Bent and the result was fantastic. Even backlighting is the big advantage over LED's. It's only in light blue, though.

You could probably keep the peagreen screen if you don't remove the polarizer

I know I am not answering your question but..

I have the big magnifying glass With light that clips on the GameBoy. I think it is really nice, has that retro gimmick feel and the games play so much better with ''bigger'' screen.

That looks cool, I'd be after a white one though...

    That's what I'm thinking, I think I'll give it a shot.

By the way guys, which LED backlighting kit do you all recommend? I've found ASM Retro branded ones on eBay, they seem good.
