I know SEGAnet is dead, it's been dead since 2002... but is it possible in any way to still connect to the internet or play online games without modding the console or something? I want to use the browser and I've seen some posts from a year or more ago saying a few games still have servers that aren't hosted by seganet.
The browsers still work. If you have a modem you will need service from a dial-up provider. I would highly recommend the broadband adapter if you can afford it. Some games work depending on the web service that runs it. A comprehensive listing is available at onlineconsoles.com http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/content_gameslist.php Most online services are dead. There's a small community that still plays Quake III and PSO. Not bad for services that were cancelled over a decade ago.
never played quake 3 dreamcast version but was into the pc one big, was a great game and so easily moddable with new maps characters etc source code is now out and open sourced i think. dreamcast had so much un exploited potential i really did come out too early for its own good
I don't suggest a BBA they are shite!! They can only play two games PSO and Quake III. If you get a TLS/Netopia setup it allows you to easily network your 56k modem into your router and supports 6 games and doesn't cost nearly as much with many more benefits as you can then use it as well to play Sega Saturn games via Netlink over your high speed connection as well. I use one myself and my ping is always incredibly low and since the DC was built around 56k all games run perfectly with no lag or stuttering. As for Quake III I have a custom disc with all the PC maps I could find integrated into the DC port. Works great but one must have a keyboard to access the levels. Starlancer is also great fun online as is Maximum Pool and 4x4 Evolution. 4x4 EVO game has been hacked to allow the PC DLC to be used as well as making custom trucks yourself with tools out on the net. The BBA doesn't support any of those games I am afraid. The 56k modem is the best method to still play online any day of the week IMO. Google TLS and Netopia Dreamcast Setup to see a full extensive guide how to easily set this up and enjoy your DC again online.
What about Ferrari F355 Challenge? I heard the servers went down in 2006, is there anyway to set up a private server?
Nope no one has managed to get that working but system link play still works great and play the crap out if it all the time.
After quickly checking around it'd be cheaper to buy 2 BBAs than a line simulator and Netopia router. As for the lag bit, that is only the games that are left that we can play online. I have extremely vivid memories of X-Play reviewing Ooga Booga and them commenting (and showing video) of how bad the lag was. Not sure anymore but I want to say it was laggy for 56k and for the BBA.
I don't think F355 has a online racing option, just some kind of exchange ghost data or something... I played Ooga Booga online and don't remember any lag, and I was playing on a crappy brazilian dial up line. The same for Chu Chu Rocket, PSO, Quake III, Speed Devils Online.
Sadly there is only around 3 games you can still play online. Quake 3 Phantasy Star Online (1, 2 or both? not sure - Think you need the PAL version) 4x4 Evolution This is all off the top of my head so I could be wrong.
Need to do some better checking as I paid $78 for the TLS/Netopia setup and got a SD adapter for $16. It does what the BBA does and more. BBA Games PSO v1&2 any region Quake 3 any region Doom homebrew 56k Games PSO v1&2 any region Quake 3 any region Starlancer Maximum Pool Starlancer 4x4 Evolution including PC mods TLS2 $40 Netopia 2020 $38 DC SD adapter $16 That is more games more capabilities and a lot less then two BBA"s at the extremely low price if $100 each but good luck finding them at that price. So I have a super hard time seeing the 56k network setup costing more. Besides you dont even need hardware to network your modem to your router it is just easier and always on. My buddy fatman paid under $100 as well for his setup and SD adapter. Best of all it also works with my Saturn Netlink games as well as my Genesis and SNES modems. Another extra the BBA cant do.
SNES modem? Xband doesn't work anymore and any hit me up if anyone wants to play quake 3 or phantasy star online ver 2 because I have a bba
The service is down yes but you can trick them into LAN play with Xband but the Saturn can still be played online as I play a friend on west coast and I am east coast in Daytona USA Netlink Edition.
You'll have to send me a link to where these guys are at these prices. I'm no slouch when it comes to Google but the best I could get the line simulator at was about $80 prior to shipping costs. Doesn't Duke 3D support direct dialing another Netlink user?
eBay sniping, I set filters on my phone to tell me what I am looking for and the price I want to pay is listed and I hurry and do buy it now. I never bid on anything as patience pays off. It took me two weeks to get the router and TLS at the price I was looking for. Any TLS can be used as you can see I have the SUPER old TLS2 and there are far more advanced ones that are pricey but not needed. Even the old school TLS v1 can be used but it is limited to dailing out only to one number but for what I use it for I only need one number to dial out from as the router controls the IP address the DC just needs to hear the tone for half a second and starts dialing. There are also cheaper analog modems that work as well you dont have to use the hardware that the guide maker posted as I dont and have no problems. As for Duke Nukem yes that can be played as well as about six total or is it seven other games. Either way you look at it there is a nice library of good titles we can still play online on both the Saturn and Dreamcast for being dead over a decade.
