Is my Garou: Mark of the Wolves cart a bootleg?

Discussion in 'Arcade and Supergun' started by kingofthelobster, Dec 16, 2007.

  1. Bought my cart off ebay, should've done some research about what the cart should look like before I bought it. Was kind of an impulse buy so I didn't think too much unfortunately. Whats worse is the ebay seller is "no longer a registered member" so there isn't too much I can do. Luckily I didn't pay much for it so I'm not losing too much sleep over it. I've generally had pretty good luck with ebay for mvs carts, just got burned this time.

I just ordered a "Matrimelee" cart and did my research on it to make sure I was getting exactly what I ordered. I will definitely do my research from now on and in the future to make sure I know what I'm buying first.

Curious, how much $ is not much? If it's a good working bootleg, I might pay 15$ if it's legit release is 80$+. That or if I needed EPROMs I guess. :p

$15? 700Mbits of EPROM is worth well over $100. $15 would cover only the PCB and non-memory parts heh.

Some boots can fuck up the MVS board bios, as well as erase mem card data. Most are fine but for a game as common as garou I personally wouldn't risk it.

Although given this thread is a few days old I imagine you have lol. Sure its fine, sweet game too, one of few neo fighters I enjoy.;-)

That sounds like N-G.com talk to me... The only way bootlegs can do physical damage your system is if they cause a short or they consume too much power and make the power circuit stop regulating. That's possible on a home system, but not really on a MVS since power is supplied externally. For the bootleg to erase the memory card, it'd either have to have additional malicious code, which is very unlikely, or it'd have to have physically harm/lockup the console (while the memory card was being accessed) which would be rather coincidental. Bootlegs are more likely to lockup however than legit games because of the poorer construction, and they're more likely to fail than legit games because often the FlashROMs used the bootlegs aren't meant to interface with 5V logic.

  6. I paid about $40 for the cart. Works perfectly as far as I can tell, haven't come across any mission animation, sound, intros, etc. Yeh, not a great price for a bootleg, but then again I thought I was getting the real thing which I would've paid $80-90 for.
Yeah, haven't had any problems with it. I really doubt it'll mess up my board, I've been playing a bootleg Waku Waku 7 cart for years now and never realized it until this whole situation made me curious.

    Another sweet fighter.

Been lucky myself, 40 or so mvs carts, no boots. A couple of repro labels/shell swaps though.

Well what can I say? I don't buy bootleg shit. :p The only bootleg I have I bought intentionally. The MK1 bootleg that was all one board, but it turns out it's a piece of shit. But I didn't pay much for it.

  9. Wow, you defnitely are lucky then. I usually buy stuff off of ebay, been selling there for years so I'm used to it. Unfortunately, a lot of sellers post crap pictures (unlike me, I'm probably obsessive). Gotten a handful of bootlegs, but I've had mostly great luck and gotten some excellent deals along the way.
