Check to see if it shows up in the BIOS... most BIOSes will tell you somewhere what drives are connected. If it isn't being read there, then yeah it's almost certainly dead. Also listen to see if you can hear it spin up.

You could also try plugging it into another PC to see if it is also not recognized.

If the BIOS can't see the second hdd don't even bother checking in Windows, it won't be there.
Take it out and try it on another PC or laptop, or try swapping the hdds around, that way you will test both the hdds and the SATA connectors

Do you have an external HDD enclosure handy? if so pop the non-working HDD in there and see if the drive shows up, if it doesnt then its most likely dead.

From what you have told us already I imagine its either dead or has some connection problem (damaged connector?)

Does the laptop support Raid 0 or Raid 1?
If not the Sata 0/1/2 port may be disabled in Bios

hi guys im back , thanks for the extra tips and support. Today i decided i would remove the HDD and put it in my PC or a External Enclosure , so i took the cover off on the Laptop then removed some screws on a shielding and there is no HDD there. Most likely the previous owner removed it for some reason , i am going to email the shop after this and see if i can get a partial refund as it was advertised as 1.5TB and there is only 750GB of HDD space meaning one HDD is present.

thanks for the help guys it is much appreciated , problem solved

Good luck on your refund. :)

What size does the BIOS say the hard drive is?
