Hi guys. My NEW copy of Splinter Cell arrived today, no scratches on disk. I put in the game, and it says not recognized! I tried a clean CD, it went to the Music screen and showed all the tracks, but when I click play, it scrolls through the list and doesn't play anything. The lengths are right. Can someone please help? I don't want buying all this softmod gear to be a waste.
Update: I asked my dad if he had any Torx screw bits, and he had 10-40s. I'm gonna try clean the laser, because I peeked in the drive while it was open, and it was f*cking dusty.
Dead lasers seems to be a staple of the original xbox. Try cleaning it with pure alcool and qtip. Be gentle, not to put the lens out of alignment.
You can always tweak the pot just a bit as well. Tell us what DVD-ROM drive you have will help a bit as well.
They make CD's with little brushes on them. You put the disk in, the motor spins it, and it dusts off the laser. Much easier and faster than taking things apart.
I'm back. I bought one of the brush discs, that failed. I cranked open the box, and I have a Samsung drive. Gonna talk to local EB Games, if not, I'll take it apart. Also, ages ago, I was playing Twin Sanity, and it went black and white. But it was scratched to hell, so thats probably why. It just sat, unused for awhile. Also, console was previously chipped by past owner, but was removed. DVD drive has "SID 4.15" or something written on it.
Softmod Installer Deluxe. It never had a chip... Samsung drives give me the most trouble, EB games won't tell you anything. You'll have to either buy another XBOX, or find another drive. I have some spare drives but not sure how long they'll last.
Eugh, any news on possibly fixing Xplorer360 without XP? This when having a 64 bit PC bites you in the ass. Will rip open XBOX tomorrow and take a peek around.
Please keep the topics separate. I've answered you already with Xplorer360. If you haven't opened the drive yet, open it, clean the laser with alcohol+q-tip, then see how that goes. Try various amounts of games, drives are picky in their old time. Everything fails, buy a new laser, drive, or xbox. Nothing else you can really do.
Agh. Yep, I ripped open the drive, cleaned the laser using qtip + alcohol and tried it. Didn't work. Looks like I'll be buying a new drive, or a new xbox.
