Today when switching on my PC I was shown a really messed up Windows XP Boot screen.

Also many icons within the software are messed up.

Viewing videos also has problems with coloured blocks everywhere like a really crappy MPEG1 file.

I've done a full virus check and spybot but nothing was found. Does anyone have any information on this sort of problem or am I going to have to buy a new video card?

Make sure the drivers are installed correctly, if it persists then remove the card from the slot and plug it back in again. If it persists then buy a new video card...

It could be a driver issue I guess because if I run the mouse over a messed up icon it will return to it's correct image but then mess up again as I move the mouse away from it.

Try booting in safe mode to see if the problem persists too. (press F5 or F8) after the BIOS screen and before it er boots.

Well, I reinstalled the drivers and it seems to have fixed windows when it's running but the boot is still looking a bit iffy. Also the card seems to be running a little slower. I'll try removing it ten putting it back in.

I had a similar problem years ago... In the end, the problem was with the monitor, an old CRT i had.

So try testing it with another monitor, and use another pc to test this monitor. Also, check the cable that connects the monitor to the PC.

    Hope you find the problem.

I had a problem like that on a GeForce 2 card. It was dying, and I got it to look fine in Windows but not on boot screens and BIOS. Eventually, it just gave up.

Make sure you give it a proper burial. :p

Thanks for the help guys. It's defiantly the card. Took it out, gave it a clean then put it back in. No image at all. Third try I get a really messed up image and then it started to clean it's self up a bit. It sure looks like I'll have to get a new card. Bugger!

Yeah, it's probably the video card, but if you have the chance, before buying a new card try using a borrowed one just to be sure the card is the trouble.

In some cases that error can mean that the PCI express / AGP port is failing, or even that the CPU is dying. These errors are not that common, but I've seen them before.

Those look like issues brought on by an overheating card or a card that has been running too hot over a protracted period of time to me.

If the heatsink was really dirty there may have been poor airflow, if that's the case it night be on its last legs right enough because it has cooked.

I've seen brand new cards have these problems right out the box and some people have baked their cards in the oven at 385 degrees for like 10 minutes and they've worked afterward's.

Not saying you should try it but it does seem to work.

Yeah, it turned out that may have been the problem. The fan over the heatsink was thick with black dust. I've now bought a new card which is running fine but giving me problems due to conflicting driver problems. Blacks out or runs slow. I'll sort that out though.

install drivercleaner. that helps in removing remnant drivers.
