Game-wise I mean. I've only heard of one PSX translation project, where I've heard of at least two Saturn ones (even though the games weren't patched). Seems to me the PSX has the most games that need to be translated (RPGs) but nobody is doing them. THey'd also be easily playable since PSX emulation is so widespread. Thoughts?
I don't think it's harder than any other system. I heard that portuguese translations of these games exist: - Silent Hill - Resident Evil 2 - Resident Evil 3 - Final Fantasy VII
One thing about the PS is that a lot of games use the same file formats (TIM for images, VAB/VAG for sounds etc.). That might come to one's advantage. Also, there's a lot of modded PSX's about (opposed to modded Saturns) so a lot of people would be able to play translated games on the original hardware :smt023 If anyone ever embarks on a PS translation project, drop me a line and I might be able to help you with the low-level side of things...
I'm sure that they had managed to get selfbooting back-up games running on the PS? Only a few though?? Thats a damn good bit of hacking imho (not for piracy related things, just technically an impressive bit of hacking).
Oh yeah. I totally forgot. I think all versions of Winning Eleven, after Winning Eleven 4, got translated, and with changed teams, music, videos, sounds. I do have Campeonato Brasileiro 2002, which is Winning Eleven 6 J.League, translated to english, with Brazilian club teams, new intro, new sounds. It's great!
There have been some people working on selfbooting PS games, apparently by doing something with a magic marker :smt043 Lost the link, it was on some CD/ISO forum. However, it seems that several HK companies have succeeded in pressing selfbooting PS discs like all those bootdiscs etc.
I heard that you can use make your own by just telling the burner to deliberately burn some bad sectors in the beggining of the CD.
I was reading about this on CD freaks, apparently it were able to make progress and even change the psx logo (that 3D P thing) all by doing something in the groove/wobble thing, it was like ages ago but the thread was massive and HIGHLY informative. Let me try to find a link. edit: here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?&threadid=48477
Changing the boot logo is possible via the normal way... as in, you can do it on a modded PSX too with a normal CD-R if you modify the ISO. Its a normal TMD 3D model file :smt033
Well, I was mainly talking about text compressions and tables. IE -- to translate a game, would it require Assembly knowledge, etc.
