Rumors about Nintendo's upcoming NX console have been picking up steam lately, and this news is definitely going to add fuel to the fire. Nintendo has reportedly filed a patent for what looks like a new console controller, which was first pointed out by a NeoGAF forum member Thursday.

Here is the rather dense abstract from the patent application, which Nintendo first filed in February and was published on Thursday:

"An example operation apparatus includes: a direction input operation section provided on a front surface of a housing of the operation apparatus and at such a position that, in a state where the operation apparatus is held with at least one hand of a user, the direction input operation section is allowed to be operated with a thumb of the hand; and a rotation operation section which is provided on a surface different from the front surface of the housing and at such a position that, in a state where the operation apparatus is held with the hand or the other hand of the user, the rotation operation section is allowed to be operated with an index finger of the hand or the other hand and which is an operation section capable of being rotationally operated."

What all of that seems to mean is there are scroll wheels on the shoulders of this controller that can be used with your index fingers or with your thumb on one hand if you're holding the controller portrait-wise.

Not gonna touch the "NX" topic just yet... but about those scroll wheels: perfect for turning in FPSes, amongst a lot of other things. Simple yet effective, even more so if they're made to also still be clickable like your grandpa's boring old shoulder buttons. Makes you wonder how noone came up with that before. Hats off to Nintendo - again.

(Reminds me a bit of the Pong controllers from way back when, I guess...? Not the same by a long stretch, but they're the closest thing I can think of.)

Another screen built into the controller? Let's hope for some solid functionality.

Looks like they haven't learnt their lesson. A controller doesn't need absorbs of crap on it like a screen. It need buttons, D-pad and analogue sticks. That's it.

it would be cool if they incorporated the 3D display from the 3DS in it.

Why? What is the point of that. You may as well make it a hand held device rather than a console controller.

Well the Wii U is sort of a hybrid handheld device since you can play it without a TV. I just thought it would be cool as an option, otherwise it's just like the Wii U again. I don't know about only 2 buttons either. But anyway, I hope they take some time to release this because I just bought a friggin Wii U (mario maker bundle)

Anyone else noticed that it seems the triggers can spin similarly to volume-wheels or scroll-wheels?

I think you're right. "Wheel Type Operation Selection" is #24 and that's what the two triggers are labeled as. Interesting.

Scrolling Shoulder buttons, like the middle button of a mouse? That's pretty cool. I guess Nintendo will probably be rather obsessive about designing it. I guess this could make Resident Evil easier for me.
