Okay so I have owned this ps3 since maybe... November? But right away i noticed that if my tv was very low I could hear the lens array moving as it loads...

Sort of like a low reving over and over again.

But really I may be blowing things out of porportion since I need to be five feet or closer to it and it is only if I am playing with my tv volume at a whisper.

Does this with all games it seem. Like a "whirr" sort of sound cycling for a few seconds and then it seems to be done loading and it stops. Very faint click sound after each one... Not the hdd... Just seems like maybe this is it loading game data?

    Should I be worried?

It's a 120gb slim (or 160? Can't recall) and other than that it's fine. No yellow lights nothing else.

I just noticed on the Sony site there is a one year warranty on it. That's good, but is that sound still normal? Can anyone lend their experience here?

I got lucky and have had only two xbox 360s... I hoped the ps3 would be a little better with my household adopting it so far Into it's lifecycle.

I have a 120Gb slim (CECH-210XA) since June 2010. I'm normally within 2 - 6 (edited from 1 - 4 after I got out the tape measure :p) feet of it when in use and my TV volume is always relatively low. It always makes noise when the drive is active. This is because a) there is a motor spinning the disc and b) there is a motor moving the lens into position. Noise is normal.

Now if it was loud clicking, then I'd be worried, but even then not that much.

As you are not describing any actual noticeable problems such as reading errors etc it is unlikely that the noise is telling you it is about to fail and more likely because your TV usually drowns out the sounds you've have had a sudden bout of paranoia ;)

If in doubt bung a lens cleaner in there to make yourself feel a little better :p

    Thx.

I nearly bought an extended warranty on it. I did not and now I am 106 days into the purchase.
I found the receipt after posting and it is October 15th.

It had "freaked out" one time... For no apparent reason while watching netflix and moving in/out of menus the system froze. I restarted it and assassins creed popped out.

Note, I was not actually playing a game and netflix was streaming via the app, there was no netflix disc to speak of.

Overall I have to say the failure rate of our modern day appliances.. For shame.

People often cite how older items worked better, but remember they had next to no moving parts. And even the NES would fail with the spring loader going.

My xbox never did RROD but it would freeze during extended xbox live arcade sessions so I had it swapped out.

I use my ps3 10x more than my xbox as it is the flawless streaming appliance so far with the ps3 java media server and netflix...that and I always likes Sony 1st party games.

I cant believe I missed out on uncharted for so long.

[ok moderators... Loads of crap to discuss or we can close the topic lol!]

Except that I own a Sony watchman... Nearly 20 years old and still working flawlessly.

I smell a fanboy. But maybe you were trying to be funny?

Not necessarily a fanboy. I am against Sony products, companies, subsidiaries, Sony-funded tech, businesses that associate with Sony, Sony TV channels, Sony music labels and companies that are partially owned by Sony, but I am not necessarily a fanboy.

(That was meant to be funny.)

My slim crashes all the time and it is the model which supposedly has the 45nm process which is allegedly less prone to crashing - I wouldn't worry about it. Mine can be on from 16 - 40 hours at a time though, depending how invovled I am with a game, how busy I am and if I can or can't sleep. They're not meant to be worked so hard for so long :(

I agree though most products manufactured by Sony are a crock of shit with regards to longevity - they conveniently fail when another product has shipped when decades old electronics from other firms, sometimes even Sony, is still going strong :p I'd rarely buy a Sony TV or Laptop for that matter (remember the batteries bursting into flames? lol) as ven if the electronics don't fail they look scruffy quickly too as their facias shed their colouring easily and in no time at all a new device can look like an old one :(

The core problem is cheap components that result in 1-year lifespans, which is the curse of most modern technology - TVs, washing machines, DVD players, whatever. Sony suffer it as much as anyone else, it's just that they seem to still have a reputation for quality (in the West at least), a reputation that hasn't been deserved for a decade or more. Maybe in the 80s a Sony product would compare favourably to the competition but these days it's all the same shit with a different label.

Microsoft used to assemble the first xbox in Mexico, Guadalajara by solectron.

My PS3 crashes whilst using the XMB all the time - although I know this is due to a media server bug more than any fault with the console.

Still, already had to rip it open and replace the laser once - hopefully it'll last. :(

There were a decent number of 20GB/60GB PS3s that were made in Japan. They first started production in Japan, started it in China fairly soon after, and outsourced all manufacturing to China once the production process matured enough. I believe that there were PS3s made in Japan until March of 2007, but I could be wrong.

    NTSC-J PS3 production codes:
    2-896-886-01(60GB)/11(20GB) Japan
    2-896-887-01(60GB)/11(20GB) China

I definitely agree that modern Sony products aren't as good as they used to be. Their quality was excellent into the 1980s and it seems that they started to focus less on quality in favor of style and features.

I really haven't had too many problems with Sony products myself, though. Between my Trinitron, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Earphones, Walkman, Wireless Headset, and Floor Speakers, nothing's broken yet!
