I was wondering... is this US box of Super Mario Land 1 an authentic Nintendo product? What got me suspicious is the overall print quality which seems a little blurry and washed out in comparison to the EURO Gameboy-games I own. I also have the US version of Super Mario Land 2 and it has much better and sharper artworks on the cover. The signs of age and the carton feel like an original GB game though. I would like to hear some opinions from people who are familiar with American Gameboy games... maybe the first lineup had worse cartons than the later releases like mentioned Super Mario Land 2? Here's a shot of the cover: Another one of the back. The "Times New Roman"-like font seemed a little weird to me, did it really look like this? Lastly, a comparison shot of both, the supposedly American manual and its German counterpart. While ours is lacking the beautiful artwork, the GB logo has more defined edges while the US one looks rather washed out - just like on the cover. ???
The back definitely looks like a translation of the European release. Euro release http://www.gamerankings.com/gameboy/585933-super-mario-land/images/box68394.html US Release http://www.gamerankings.com/gameboy/585933-super-mario-land/images/box38737.html
Okay, that's weird. If the US version had an entirely different backcover (font, font color, text itself is different as well), where does my box come from? It says NoA Redmond on the back and "For sale and unse in the USA, Canada and Mexico only" on the side.
Look on the inside sleeves and theres usualy same code as for the game and manual which tells from which region it comes. Something like NTR-SM-USA etc.
Does the Nintendo seal of quality have a shimmer to it or is it flat printed. Flat printed = bootleg.
It says DMG-ML-USA on the inside sleeves. The Nintendo seal is not shiny. I'll check if that's different to my SML2, I'm not sure but I thought none of the Nintendo seals were actually "shinier" than the cover that surrounds it.
The US box linked on gamerankings is a rerun from 1996, check the fine print. The sentence "Relive Mario's greatest Game Boy adventure!" gives that away, too. What you want to compare the printing qualitity to are other really old US boxes, as the standards may have been different between regions and time periods.
Considering the at least 3 grammatical errors on the box, I have a feeling it's a pirate or unofficial copy of some sort.

@7Force The cartridge isn't the US one, it's the German version. I guess this game was bought by some father for his son before it came out in Europe since the US instructrions includes many hand-written translations (written by an adult). The cart is a German one, I don't know why. The grammatical errors are not really an indicator for a pirate, this was pretty common in the early Nintendo days. I took a closer look on that Nintendo seal and it's not shiny because the print quality is just as blurry as the whole cover. Apart from that, it doesn't look like a bootleg at all so I guess I probably have the real deal. But isn't there someone who just has the game himself and could confirm it?^^
