So the new generation of consoles were released last year. But the 7th gen consoles are still going strong receiving new releases like Assassins Creed Rogue and Destiny. Is this the last important year for the old consoles ( Xbox 360 and PS3 )? I think that this generation has already lasted too long. Prices for the 7th gen consoles and games are low and you can still get a lot of early 7th gen games sealed for next to nothing. So I think this is also the best year for a serious collector to get games for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. And yes, this is also the best time to VGA grade games ( although I think that's dumb ). So when do you think the 7th gen will truly end ? And what's the best time to collect for these consoles ?
It's good that Microsoft didn't do it like in the past with the OG Xbox. That system was cut off way too early, but that probably did boost the Xbox 360 sales.
The original Xbox limped along with a couple of years of official support after the 2005 launch of the Xbox 360, though Xbox Live wasn't shut off for the original system until 2010. Other systems have had much longer life cycles; Sony continued producing the PlayStation 2 in Japan until January of this year, nearly 13 years after its initial release. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/09/microsoft-xbox-360-support-to-go-for-another-three-years/
I think last year was the last best year for the 7th gen. If you look now, all the AAA titles in the pipeline are being developed with 8th gen in mind, and getting dumbed down ports for the 7th gen. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the last 360/PS3 games don't come out until 2016 or 2017. Get Madden 18 on the PS3!
