http://www.cnbc.com/id/31084652 My gut tells me that Nintendo killed a Game Boy Advance successor, probably one that was either GameCube-based, somewhat GameCube-based, or that had GameCube-level performance. I'd have given alot for something like this! My memory is failing me, but I seem to recall many years ago of a GCN2 (console) and GBA2 (handheld) in development, before Revolution/Wii and DS.
hmmmm.. interesting indeed! but i dont think it was scrapped without reason. Nintendo's trick from the beginning was interactivity. Ninty wanted the fans to feel the game they were playing even though it didn't have the best technology involved. They wanted to keep things simple with the ds and wii thats why they didnt enter in the 7th gen console market with a strong console. Thats why ditched the GC2(if it existed) and the GBA2 ideas.. To enter the console market without competition. And the sales tell they did pretty well... I wonder what they'll do next. They MUST be planning something good for their own good.. or the other 2 companies will drink nintys blood.
Yeh they better release a console with newer hardware. A third gamecube frankenstein really won't sell.
The star fox 2 leak was only possible due to it being co developed by argonaut. If someone leaks the beta oot or mario 64 beta then maybe there is hope this hardware would be found.
I would think that the handheld in development was to compete graphically with the psp. Every kid basically wants a ds and wii still, so theres no need to really compete with themselves. Once the DS sales start to slide (essentially when everyone in the world has one), we'll then see a new handheld from nintendo.
They have probably disintegrated it by now. Or maybe just locked up inside a huge vault that contains other mythical items such as a Mario 64 beta, a few snes portable prototypes, some copies of ura zelda etc...
DS was originally touted as the "third pillar" of nintendo's offensive - going seemingly alongside whatever home console they had and whatever gameboy model they had. I think the level of success of the DS has taken Nintendo by surprise and i suspect the sh1t/binned product would have been the next Gameboy. At the moment, i can't see Nintendo muddying their golden DS sales stream with a second handheld that would possibly confuse people : next hand held will be DS-2 , next home console will be Wii2 and the Gameboy name will be held back for any bad times.
The phrase I remember from Nintendo themselves was, "The DS is not replacing the Gameboy". Then it started printing money and they ditched the Gameboy.
