Surely kettle calling the pot black? HCK does have experience in dealing in the industry and you just seem to be a 15 year old having a rant.

Prices for albums in Japan as a whole have not changed much in the last 30 years, although 30 years ago the dollar and the pound were much stronger, in the mid 80s when the dollar would have bought you 250 yen, albums were still around 2800 to 3000 yen, so that would have been around $12, nowdays the Dollar is as weak as asthmatic ant trying to lift an average american falling to under 80yen... so the same album is >$35...

Some tapes in the day, where >10,000 Yen and a lot of the time this was because they were only sold as rental tapes rather then consumer tapes.

Japan also has had a history of shops that have rented Tapes, CD, VHS, Laserdisc, Betamax, VHD, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc... So the high prices to people were not a problem. I mean which country embraced Minidisc, a format which you could record to digitally and was affordable way before CD-Rs were. So maybe you should do some research and think before you type crap. Personally I did think HCKs comment was pretty accurate.

I've mostly given up buying new cd's now. Just wait for a second hand copy to appear in Book Off and save about 1000Â¥.

The exchange rate highlights how much of a massive rip-off Japanese music is though. Seeing as an identical "overseas" press of an album costs less than half... with a massive "Not for sale in Japan" sign all over it

It isn't just music though, games and DVD's are stupidly expensive too. Good luck having any change left after buying a boxset of Lost or something.

No wonder places like Book Off and Trader do such good business.

What's amazing is how opposed the industry (CD, DVD, Games, etc) is to dropping prices, or having a competitive marketplace, and at they same time how equally opposed they are to stores selling used product!

It's not like they're charging the prices because it's the only way they can make a profit. They really, really don't give two licks about the consumer.

Maximum profit even if it means not doing the math to find out that a lower price means a much greater volume of sales resulting in even more profit.

In the mean time they thrash while their business model is dying pissing their customer base off severely. Part of pirating these days is more of a "I'd like to pay for this, I really would. But the executives in your line of work are total dicks. So instead, I pirate it to piss them off and let the content creator know their stuff is good but should really ditch the dead weight".

It's true... but while distribution is open in American and Europe, it's a closed model in Japan. So if you buck the system too much, you'll be SOL in finding places to carry your product.

Do we know each other? you and HCK are just pathetic pricks.

Sorry to show so much respect for both of you but it seems this is the only way you are able communicate with the outside...

Nerds like you on the internet are just thinking too high of themselves nowadays.

Those were my final words on this elitist forum.

Says Happier06, while posting on a forum for development, video game collecting etc. Did you sign up for the forum without checking what it catered to?

I actually think it's pretty cool I was called an elitist nerd. Especially in relation to gaming.

But any way you cut it, kids- piracy is just plain wrong. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

I admit I pirate, but if I like something I then go and find it for cheap or if I hate the record company I try to buy official merch directly from the band. Unfortunately some people don't hold this same idea and just pirate and pirate. I like to think of myself as an ethical pirate.

I only pirate films. But mostly older or some obscure films which I already had payed boundless times for, since I am a pay tivi user since over 20 years (and before that my parents were pay tivi users). Sometimes there is not even a chance to buy or rent those films.
Maybe it sounds a little bit like an excuse, but still a good one.

You should bear in mind that the exchange rate is utter shit, with other currencies dying on their arses.

If I own a movie on Laserdisc I have no moral qualms with pirating a Blu-Ray copy, afterall the MPAA/RIAA really want them to be thought of as "licenses" to watch the movie as opposed to people owning the movie outright. A license can be revoked apparently but I'd like to see them try it.

I also own old cassette tapes. No qualms pirating a CD rip since its "just a license" according to the RIAA. What if my CD is ruined? I still have that "license" right? Why do I need to buy another "license"?

As soon as American copyright law gets its shit together and stops being abusive then I will stop being civilly disobedient. Part of being American is that we don't have to stand for unjust laws and that being American in America means we can disobey laws that are unjust. Doesn't mean a few heads won't get knocked in the process though.

Obviously anyone not American will probably have a different viewpoint than the above.

I don't think the RIAA/MPAA will be happy until they find a way to charge you $1 everytime you listen to a song, with only 0.2c going to the artist...
