Thread title basically sums it up.

I lent my j-tagged Xbox 360 to my friend to try out some protos he has but, being an Xbox 360, it ended up red-ringing on him and shortly afterwards it wouldn't even power on.

I've had 360s red-ring on me in the past but they all powered on so now I'm wondering if it's A) possible to salvage it B) and worth salvaging or C) easier to find another j-tag.

I also don't have it handy on me to open it up and gauge the damage, not that I really could. So I'm just coming to Assembler to gather your opinions as I'm sure you're all much more familiar with repairing systems than I. Thoughts?

Oh, I almost forgot this important detail: it's either a Zephyr or Falcon motherboard. I'm leaning towards Falcon but I can't quite recall but it's certainly not a Jasper model, if it was then I wouldn't be here. ;)

Does it have an HDMI port? then it's a falcon, else it's a zephyr.
If it came from ms replacing (after rrod while in guarantee) then it could be Opus (falcon without hdmi so it fits the original chassis)
At any rate IMHO it would be better to get a jasper with the RGH hack (or a slim model if you don't mind waiting some more to boot).

Yep. Find someone who can do proper BGA reballing. $60 is the average for those on eBay but I don't know if they're any good at it or a bunch of morons.

Yeah, that's the standard fix and my friend's taking it a shop that does console repair to get a quote on it but I'd figure to check on here if you guys thought it was worthwhile.

I do have a question regarding reballing: will I have to worry about it red-ringing again? If so, are there some additional steps I can take to prevent that?

It can red ring again because the real fix is to redesign the entire board to reduce flexing. The slim does that very well but if you treat it well, give it diamond based thermal paste and plenty of ventilation it should last a good number of years. As long as the JTAG can sell for more than $60 its worth it.

Exactly, the "real" fix is to get a jasper and upwards 360... no matter how good a reballing is , there will always be danger of rrod again.
