http://pictures.mug-uk.co.uk/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=The-Event&id=IMG_0294 never saw one of them before, but then, on this german collector event. Does anyone know how many of those exist in the wild? The Glasses look a bit different from the schematics, but its clearly the same system: http://www.planet-atari.de/img/articles/2815/Jag-VR-Unit-3.jpg tubo
I had a chat with one of the guys that used to work for Virtuality and now runs another company. The headset is a modified headset that Philips used to make, as for two working prototypes from what I was told at least a dozen were made and he still has two and the Game On exhibition has half of one...
Are you sure it's a VR helmet and not the Atari Jaguar Lawnmower simulator? - only kidding, I just think it looks like a Flymo!
I remember there was a lot of 6 of these on Ebay for a not-fantastically-huge amount sometime this winter. I believe the auction said they retailed for around $350,000 (perhaps it was $50,000 ea?). Does anyone know what i'm talking about? They might have been in various working states or it might be something entirely different altogther...
There's only two units I know of where the head tracking actually works. The rest are partially or non functional displays.
Man i want one....I heard a Chicken and a monkey own one together and no body knows where they got the cash to buy one or what the chicken is going to do with his half.
Your correct. 2 working units (1 red and 1 blue) Red unit is low resolution and the Blue unit is high resolution. 2 empty headset shells (1 red, 1 blue) 4 trackers (for the headset) 2 which are known working with correct rom chipset, 3 have the shells. 2 mockup guns/controllers 1 PCB gun tracker 5 or 6 rom chipset variatsons (I had a dozen of them copied for backup purposes) The red one is in the states and the blue one is in UK right now. I'm not sure that Jason has ever managed to take the red unit to a show (although Ted was able to bring it to JagFest2k1). The blue unit is making plenty of rounds at events to be played at from my understanding.... it's really cool that so many people are getting to play this thing hands on. @Jamtex, I would be interested in chatting with this guy you speak of whom has a headset as well. Would be interesting to see if he's running the same rom version and if he has a modified MC3D cart or code for the elusive calibration feature that didn't make it into the final carts. If you could pass along some information details to him to see if he's interested in talking sometime let me know and I"ll send a PM your way. While a dozen may have been made, my understanding was they were all destroyed (supposedly) yet somehow a few have managed to surface. It wasn't really up to Atari to tell them to destroy it though... I think it was more on Virtuality's part in anger? due to lack of payment from Atari.
... I saw (and tried out) the blue headset last year while at the Retro-Gaming Connexion in France. The owner, who was British, told me he appeared at conventions often to allow people the chance to try it out. I thought that was a pretty neat thing for him to do. I played Missile Command 3d but only for a very short time, because the display was very poor and I didn't really have much of a clue what was going on. As I played, and the headset owner helped me with the experience, particularly trying to figure out the controlls and what the hell was happening, as he watched the display on his monitor. Meanwhile, my friend laughed at my complete lack of ability before I gave up, allowing him a turn at the game. You can find some photos from the event here: http://mleguludec.free.fr/rgc2007/Photos_rgc2007.htm There's also photos of some other interesting things, such as my Super A'can on display. Nobody at the convention had ever heard of the A'can before (completely understandable), so they naturally found it to be quite the surprise.
