Hmmm due to its obscurity i think it would fit in this section nicely.. How many working jag vr units actually exist? Does anybody know more about this, except from THIS article? Also while searchin in the forum I came across this and this ... In the last link there was a post from a guy who claims to have a Jag VR unit + some other jag rarities. It would also be interesting to know an approximate price for this thing. Some interesting vids: Jag VR Vid 1 Jag VR Vid 2
I remember all the Jaguar VR headset hype from back in the early 90's. It's reminiscent of what is going on today with Microsoft and their Project NATAL. Atari banged on for ages about how VR was going to be the next big thing, and even Nintendo jumped onto the bandwagon, only to crash & burn. I am hoping that history is going to repeat itself and the same will happen with all this next-gen VR / motion sensing technology which Microsoft and apparently Sony are developing for the near future... Like the Jaguar VR headset before it, it's too ahead of its time, and the market isn't ready for such a thing, just as we weren't ready for VR back in 1994 when everything was Virtua this, Virtual Reality that...
I know of two working prototype - the red and the blue unit. The blue unit was the last prototype and featured better displays. I missed the E-Jagfest last year in Germany - they had a working red prototype there. For sure i'll go to the E-Jagfest this year. I finished my article about the JagVR and it will be printed in the next issue of the German videogame magazine Retro.
But better tracking on the red unit. There are several components to the system, you need the base station too (think only 2-3 exist) and there was a handheld gun-type thing for the buttons. In theory you could link multiple base stations for better coverage - very advanced for the time! Jaysmith2000 is the man to ask, he owned both protos for some time. Stone
Yes - i got most information from Jaysmith2000 - check his website: http://www.jaguarsector.com/ He's very active in the Jaguar szene and a nice guy.
... My friend and I tried out one of these Jag VR units at the 2007 Retro-gaming Connexion in Congis-sur-Thérouanne, France. I wasn't particularly fond of the technology, but it was a nice experience being able to play around with something that never actually got released. The guy who owns the equipment told me that he visits quite a few retro events in several countries, and lets people at each event try out the unit. I think this is really nice of him; many of the people that collect very rare equipment just let it sit, locked up. Photos from the event are available by clicking this link. Along with the Jag VR you can also see the amazingly spectacular Super A'can, which I brought along with me for reasons still unknown.
I don't know about you guys, but I had the chance to try out the well-known Dactyl Nightmare VR game on one of those Virtuality units back in the mid 1990's and I loved it so much that I'd kill for a proper home VR unit. What I tried out back then was crude and framey...I can only imagine how much better the experience could be with today's tech.
I really liked the Virtual Boy, but then again I m biased for Nintendo. It's their franchises/game design philosophy etc that drew me in on their consoles. On the other hand, I never had much respect for anything Atari..hence why I think that I wouldn't be impressed if this VR stuff of theirs ever hit the market. PS: Atari then I mean. I was a big fan of infrogrames until they started making crap games under the ATARI banner.
Hello I test one of this VR unit in a french convention (Atari Connexion), because a german who buy it come with it... but it's was very Hard to play with it because he have a lot connexion problem
