Looking for something that already sports CFW or can be modified to do so. Backwards compatibility is a huge bonus.

I thought every PS3 running CFW has ps2 backwards compatibility.

Maybe he means hardware BC...? Most models are using software emulation.

Anyways, I think any pre-super-slim model should be hackable (known signing key, embedded in ROM so Sony can't change it, or sth like that). Not 100% sure though - can someone confirm this?
edit: Ah, seems like consoles with firmware above 3.55, while still hackable, need some extra hardware for the initial CFW installation. That might complicate things a bit.

Could be, I have two friends with PS3s and neither have hacked them. I just would prefer full hardware compatibility if possible.

If that's the case, then you want a 60gb and I believe a 20gb also has hardware backwards compatibility. A very small percentage of games still have issues but nothing serious.

I'm pretty sure the original fat models are able to be flashed to a lower firmware if you have the right equipment (not sure about the slim models). It might seem like a pain in the ass, but if full hardware backwards compatibility is important and you can't find a modable 60gb or 20gb, then it's always a possibility to find one using a newer firmware and have someone else downgrade it for you.

My heart isn't set on it especially since I have a dozen PS1s and several PS2s around and with the fact that the oldest models are the most likely to fail I'm OK with a slim if it can run OFW.

Well original PS3 Slims can easily run PS1 games without problems but PS2 games doesn't work (of course) well actually as a matter of fact you can run PS2 games/backups using lastest version of Multiman (tho still in development stages i've heard) mostly it depends what you'll like to have on your console. ;)

If you don't want emulation I would just play on your actual PS1 and PS2 consoles.
I would not recommend getting a phat backwards compatible console. A lot of the consoles usually suffer from heat issues and they are quite old now.
My 40GB non backwards compatible unit has never had YLOD, but the fans come on loud after 3 minutes, usually before the game has actually loaded and it is very annoying.
My slim consoles almost run silent in comparison.
I am not sure if there has been changes in the PS3 scene, but the last time I read the forums, the slim 3000 models and the super slims can not run CFW because they shipped with firmware above 3.55.
Also the last time I read the forums, the backwards compatible units had to use the crappy cobra firmware and the usb dongle in order to load games from the hard drive without using emulation.
I have a 2500 slim model which can play PS1 and PS2 games from the hard drive and it can also boot Linux and has some of the debug features because I use the Rebug firmware.
I backed up all 30 odd PS2 pal games that I own to my PS3 hard drive and I believe there was only 1 game that did not work, the rest play quite well.

I have a spare slim running 3.41 using the USB key trick. I am not sure what you are asking for but I do not mind trading for a recent 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 3g GSM phone or AT&T LTE unlocked phone and/or kick ass gaming hardware. I live in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and do you want all of the a/v hookups or the console would be good on it's own?
