Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum.

This morning, at my local car boot sale, I stumbled upon a burgundy coloured Megadrive (a battered one sadly!). Being a fan of the system I simply had to buy it as I’d never seen one with that colour scheme/design before.

I wondered if anyone here could further enlighten me on this type of Megadrive? I haven’t (yet) been able to find out a great deal about it on the net.

For information sake – underneath it’s labelled: Megadrive PAL-I, with the model number: 1601-11.

    Picture of a similar MD:

Wikipedia labels it as an 'Original Japanese Megadrive' but I don't always trust what wikipedia says.

    Help much appreciated!

Err, that Mega Drive is black unless you are talking about the part of the ring that is white on the PAL system. That could be a Japanese or Asian model. It's a mess that's for sure. I own a real Japanese model that looks like this.

If your Mega Drive looks like that then it's probably the ultra common Asian model or if lucky a real Japan only console but it's hard to tell without knowing the serial number or taking a look at the main board.

If it looks EXACTLY like the Japanese model, it's the PAL Asian model, intended for places outside Japan which use PAL-I (specifically Hong Kong). PAL-I is also used in UK so importing there was painless.

Or sticking a game in, plugging it into a tv and switching it on. If it tunes in via RF then its a PAL-I machine. Simple really...

Ah, looks to be the Asian model. Should run all the Japanese games fine and most of the PAL / US games as well.

It wont run US and JPN games that check for 60hz, like a lot from SOR2 onwards. I've got a an original Japanese one like Yakumo with funkly little box with a built in handle.
