Oh - on one of my two nights in Japan (i went out drinking alone both times) i stumbled into a place once that had girls and charged 10,000 yen per drink - I made a stylish getaway despite the doorman having poured me a drink and me talking to a couple women

 

during the world cup i was in Osaka with friends and we stumbled into a rip off place like that. I spoke extremely broken Japanese at the time (it's still largely stuck somewhere around "failing level 2") but caught exactly what was going on.

I made a very strong point of mentioning that i only had 5000 yen on me when talking to one of the girls who suddenly appeared at our table. Drinks were getting poured and i decided to make a quick exit whilst my friends stayed.

Lo and behold, my bill came to EXACTLY 5000 yen. All my mates that stayed and got shitfaced got stung for -significantly- more than that. But yup, the bill usually comes out as "as much as we can get out of you" - if they know your limit, they'll hit it.

re: strip joints/lapdancing places - BE WARNED, these places are going to take you for everything. They aren't my thing and went there with a friend for his stag party, as i generally wasn't in to them i decided to leave around 2 hours in. The bill was horrific - when i left it was 80k just for me - and i'd had two drinks and that was it. Got psycho looking (but very nice) Russian guy who took me to the bank and made sure i got what cash i was missing out of an ATM. Again, everyone else got stung for 200k -per person-

Seriously, just have a wank - save yourself a load of trouble and money!

 

If you're partying in Roppongi, you should really talk to the door man and get a VERY, VERY clear idea of what shit is going to cost. I went to a really dodgy place for work not long ago and they were actually cool about it. It was 5000 yen all you can drink the first hour, then the normal prices. I think 2 of us were there for 3 hours and it was about 30,000 yen each. Quite cheap, and we had fun, b/c it was so dodgy. I was invited a few times to the back room, but I know there's a minimum of my pants coming off back there so I had to respectfully decline.

 

My days of partying in Roppongi are long over - hell, i'd actually take a night in at home with my pyjamas and slippers on. But yup, the odd trip out there and, like you say, as long as you clear things up before things get crazy then there's fun to be had. I know people who didn't clear things up and ended up getting a right good kicking when they couldn't pay (though that's a rarity)

If you're not bothered about never going back to Roppongi you could make a mad dash, assuming you can run faster than the tout. Something tells me that's a bad idea though.

 

haha, i had 10 years of martial arts training that always comes in handy for spots of trouble/bother - and for a fairly rotund guy, i can run fairly fast and for great lengths of time but... yeah... no thanks. Really not interested in tangling with brick hard russians - the other thing is titty bars/strip clubs really doesn't do anything for me.

Also - Money is just money, teeth tend not to come back around that easily. Better to pay up than risk the kicking.
