Just curious if anyone has gotten away with using this pass as a resident of Japan. I might have to take a trip back again this summer and I was thinking about getting it, but I wasn't sure how strict they were about checking passports. I still have my gaijin card and visa.

    Any input?

they check your passport visa stamp when you exchange the voucher for the actual pass...so i'm not sure how you would do it.

Yeah, you need to have Temporary Visitor written on your entry stamp, and they make sure to check it when you go to exchange for it.

I'd also be interested in hearing some solid info on this, I'm doing the same.

I'm also visiting Japan in April and for the first week we are going to get Japan Rail Pass.

First we arrive in Nagoya, then we travel to Kyoto for 2 days, then Osaka for 3 days and then Tokyo for 6 days. So this Rail Pass should cover our travelling fees till Tokyo and while we are in Tokyo we are going to visit Yokohama. After 6 days in Tokyo we are going back to Nagoya with individual train ticket. Do any one know how much single ticket from Tokyo to Nagoya would cost?

Aren't you just visting Japan? If so, your situation is different than his.

A single train ticket from Tokyo to Nagoya will cost:
    ¥10,780 for the Nozomi Shinkansen
    ¥10,580 for the Hikari/Kodama Shinkansen
~Â¥6000 for local lines w/ transfers
~Â¥2500 if you obtain a Seishun 18 ticket. Go here for more details: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2362.html

If you wanna take the bus, you can get it down to around ¥3500. Takes awhile, though.

the willerexpress buses are really good... used them a lot and saved a ton, but sometimes obvious intercity connections are not available. you can also hitch very very easily in Japan, a lot of the good spots are on hitchwiki.org
