Not sure if this is the proper area to post this, however, I just received my NTSC j system and was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for non-shmup releases that someone who is just learning or knowing very little kanji and Japanese would be able to enjoy. stuff like Catherine where a lot of the gameplay needs no language.

I already have the shmups on my checklist and was wondering if there were some more gems to add to my collection.

    Thanks!

after looking up gameplay videos it seems pretty out there, but is it easy to play with little to know knowledge of the language? the gameplay looked like a rhythm game, the menus seem quite confusing though.

I don't believe there are many 360 games exclusive to japan... the xbox doesnt do as well there.

BTW, I thought xbox 360's were region free... Are they region specific for games?

Yeah, they are locked. I bought it for all of the great cave shmups that are not region free. So I figured there might be some good games besides them I should check out. I see a ton of anime style rpgs and the like that are exclusives, I just dont know very much japanese so it becomes almost a chore to try to figure them out.

Microsoft allowed developers to choose the region lock for their games. Not the system it's self.

what is the purpose of region locking games? i dont see what the point is to it, i bought a ps2 game in sweden (where my mom is from and all of her family lives) a few years ago and when i came back to US it didnt work in my ps2. I dont understand why they wouldnt make the games universal

    Gal Gun.

The looks on my girlfriend's face when she saw me playing it was priceless. You can expect the same results. If you press the 'select' button the screen turns into a 8-bit fake RPG for those who wish to preserve their dignity if somebody walks into the room.

I found the demo of GalGun to be very dull. Is the full game any better? The demo was so slow and the actual shooting parts lacked any sort of thrill as found in the classics like Virtua Cop and House of the Dead. I do like the 8bit RPG option though

As for exclusives, well, I just got Virtual On 4 (Force) which is really good. There's still a very highly active online community as well.

For many reasons. Here are some:

    • Certain regions have regulatory requirements
    • Licensing can vary between regions
    • Games in different regions have different publishers (it costs a lot to release a game to market)
    • TVs used to be specific to different regions (NTSC vs PAL/SECAM)
    • Different regions have different language requirements.
Probably other reasons I forgot to mention.

Get Everyparty, the Hong Kong version. It's a great party game that is 100% english (HK version only, the JPN version only features the JPN language)

One reason to like the PS3. I have games from all regions. USA, Europe, Asia, Japan...

Anyway, back on topic. I would suggest Forza 4 and Alan Wake. Probably both are fully english, even on Japan releases. If not, maybe the Asia versions are.

All Asian versions of games are in English on the 360 so no worries there. Also many Japanese games are dual language depending on your 360's settings. Recently I bought Space Channel 5 part 2 and was pissed off because it was in English. The timing on the English songs is off IMO. I bought ths from the Japanese Market Place as well. It wasn't until I changed my 360 settings to japanese did the game play in Japanese. Even Forza 4 does this although that only changes the language, not the voice.
