Getting a Japanese AES in the mail next week, but it has no power supply. Can I use an official UK power supply on it like the PRO-POW-PAL or PRO-POW-E? I'd prefer to use a 220~240v compatible power supply instead of getting yet another 100v stepdown convertor.
Please don't advise using another PSU with an AES without knowing the facts. There are TWO different Neo Geo PSUs with two different voltages. DO NOT use the wrong one! Naturally, you could use el cheapo generic PSU with the same specs as the PSU you receive as per any game console, radio, television, VCR... or any electronic device with an external PSU. *EDIT* OK, I checked to be sure. The early consoles used PRO-POW PSUs, which were 5V 3A, negative centre. Later consoles used PRO-POW-3 / PRO-POW-E PSUs, which are 10v 1A, negative centre. IIRC the 5V PSU may have been regulated, whereas the 10V one wasn't. The 10V consoles will therefore have a regulator, so a Sega PSU should work. I can't remember offhand whether the 5V consoles had regulators, too - they probably did. You'll find a sticker on the bottom telling you what PSU to use. Go with an equivalent, or shell out a small fortune on an original. Your choice! Incidentally, why would you need yet another stepdown? How many consoles do you need to run at once?! Just plug in the console you're playing at the time - only 1 stepdown required!
I have a NEO-POW3 AC 100V that outputs DC10V and 1000mA I sold my jap AES years ago don't need that PSU.
They should be avoided where feasible anyway. Waste of space and electric bill (as well as shipping cost to import power supplies). Mainly internal powered systems have a particular need for stepdown.
Well, many of us want a complete system which includes the correct PSU, so shipping cost usually isn't an issue... plus you're talking kg increments by that stage anyhow so it often doesn't make a huge difference. I agree, though - it's possible to run a lot of consoles off replacement PSUs.
