Great photos, but no photos of a certain great arcade in Shinjuku?

it's easier for me to hit Shinjuku on the way home or at a lunchtime, so saving those trip outs for then - as i'm off work at the moment, means i can hit Aki easier :)

    awesome, that'd be cool.

Still digging through, took some more shots today - added a few place holder sets.

    Ten sets now... ooooo! lol.

I'm also interested in dumping pictures in there from more obscure places too

I've taken plenty of photos over the years. I should take more though before the arcades start dropping off. I have the camera to handle low light... just not the time to go.

nice shots and write up! :bow

yeah, time is the biggest problem basically - doing anything right now is pretty difficult what with the rugrat and work, but will keep plodding on.

Seems to be some mild interest at least so will just keep snapping when i can.

I had a nice long walk from Ikebukuro to Shinjuku and knew that I would walk along the road to where Mikado is, except when I got there instead of the best arcade in Shinjuku I get to see a pile of rubble where the building was.

I know it's in another location (although I am sure they have been there for a while as the website used to have 2 locations and now they have one...) but it's a little sad that it's gone from Shinjuku. There was a another arcade in the same pedestrian road that tht Taito arcade is, and during 2004/2006 it was a good arcade before Mikado sprang up and it became crap and I noticed that had disappeared replaced by a corporate looking building.

Seeing those remind me of Yakumo's videos of arcades and game stores.

I think they were just riding out the lease in Shinjuku. By the time Takadanobaba had opened, the Shinjuku one was basically 5 floors of games you'd find on the retro floor of any regular game center, plus pinball & Gain Ground.

    1. In certain places absolutely (like the HEY).
    2. Certainly not so old and still looks the very same if you would enter it right now.

When you mention the retro GC in Shinjuku do you mean the one that sat in a corner of a building?
Had a McDonalds and a petshop nearby and was parallel to an elevated train line and that EPSON building?

slight topic change, but i have spent the best part of the last month in the UK. During this time away i went to Blackpool - the, ahem, "Las Vegas of the North!" (no chance! lol)

Anyways, it has "The Golden Mile" which is basically one long strip of arcades and other amusement establishments. As a kid this place was everything - whilst my home town had a strange glut of arcades , Blackpool had all the new machines and a few hours in the Golden Coral or any other such large scale establishment was a highlight of growing up.

So - after not being there since 1991, i decided to venture back with my family. Now, i was expecting the arcades to have decreased but it was even weirder than that. Almost all the arcades are still there and not looking a whole lot different - however, the games are pretty much gone and all that is left is "hook a duck" games and various medal/slot games with some strange exceptions :

    1) PC games refactored into arcade games - some weird Far Cry style shooter and some Need For Speed game

    2) Guitar Hero games

    3) Sega Rally + Sega Rally 2. One place had 4 player outrun 2.

That was it. I know time flies by but still - the sad demise of arcades is... sad. :/

Some extremely nice quality Sega Rally 2 machines though - seems to be THE game in the north of england. Saw a lot of them in my travels. Almost surreal infact.
