The main buying and treating of alcoholic delicacies in Japan is primarily among businessmen / salarymen, I think.

[Among traditionalists, anyways] a lot of actual business is done after working hours when employees go and socialize at bars. That's when business partners really get to know each other and reach the inner depths of what is termed as "social harmony" among East Asian scholars. The more you drink, the more your glass will be filled! However, this does have consequences - Japan has quite the rate of alcoholism among employees.

It's probably more accurate to say that alcohol is the social glue of Japan, and that colleagues generally socialize together, after work, quite often with the boss. The time that it's specifically aimed at the salarymen is the bounenkai/shinnenkai season which is just now ending. I fucking hate it -- restaurants are entirely closed for private parties, and getting a cab if your white is a bitch.

Ah...! I totally forgot about bounenkai! Man, how interesting. I can totally see how gaijin get the short end of the stick during this time especially, though, heh.

I do think it's allowed if you have a closed compartment and you're not in plain sight... Something to do with your own safety or social unease...

*Broke my hand last Friday/Saturday in a brawl... it was a strange crowd this weekend.... yep, think I'll pay a visit to the hospital after work.

It's straight up illegal in most states in the US... at least the ones I've been do. It is quite dumb. Just let people sleep it off.

I'd be willing to bet it has something to do with general laws against the unacceptable nature of vagrancy in the US... :\

Probably. Although for what it's worth, I saw people clearly living out of their cars in Hawaii.

Used to get wasted with friends from my university in Kyoto back in the day.

But like already written here, most bars have exorbitant prices.

I remember once getting wasted in a karaoke booth and spending 2 hours in the restroom speaking to my toilet seat.....what an embarassing memory.

Barely remember how I made it back into my dorm...

He means throwing up. Back in Texas we always said "Praying to the Porcelain God".

I like the term "Technicolor Yawn" in that case.

Thanks for the memories, Yak. I recognized everything in the video. Bob's bar was one of the best around. It's one of the few places where Japanese and gaijin can mingle with some comments every now and then instead of the "I don't talk to foreigners" or "I will practice my English with foreigners" games. Seemed like a really natural place, and Bob is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. Tell him I said hello when you see him again.

Will do Eric. I was actually there last Saturday with Lesley. I left at 6:30am but he stayed on a bit longer to chat with Bob. I won't be going back for another few weeks but I'll be sure to say hi for you.

I remember visiting several clubs and bars back in 2005 in Kyoto.

One of them was a reggae clunb with japanese girls going there to dance.

I went there to dance too and have some good time. But what I experienced there was nasty.

About 5-6 young, good looking japanese girls trying to dance to reggea music AND about 12-15 35-55 year old expats trying to "prey" on them.

It was really puke-inducing. They were like dancing around the girls, everyone of them trying to make the move before someone else does. And most of them looked like real scumbags.....

stopped going to that club after that night.

I also remember an expat who once told me proudly that he would flash his dick out in clubs when dancing with girls.....
