I figure a thread dedicated to bad experiences isn't a bad idea. I generally have had great luck in this department (my only negative feedbacks, a total of 2, were in no way whitey related).

Anyways, here was what I thought was a near miss.
    Seller in question here

This is a shop in Saitama. Their prices aren't fantastic by any stretch, but hey, they all have BIN prices so if you want something, it's yours. Anyways, I bought something for a user and then read the auction description. At the end of the read part it says, "bids by anyone other than Japanese is strictly forbidden". It doesn't say anything about a Japanese address or people that can't speak Japanese. The bulleted points at the bottom say:

    -No bidding by foreigners
-No bidding by foreigners even with Japanese acting on their behalf
-No bidding with the intent of resale

My solution here was to just pose as my wife and get the deal over. I had to change the name on my email account to look like it came from her...although the address has 'gaijin_punch' in it... hope they didn't notice. Anyways, I had to search through my Inbox to get the payment information, and noticed that I did a deal w/ the same user back in April w/ my old account. I did the deal as my real name though, and it went through w/o a hitch. I followed their tedious form to a T, which probably helped.

Definitely not worth the risk of the negative for me at this point, and it's obviously not worth the hassle. Although it might've been a false alarm. Anyway, hope that is useful.

that's hilarious. i'm just thinking about the intention of that seller to write such strange and almost racist rules in his auction terms. does he also sell some very maniac teen-rape-hentai-games or what?

I don't think people realize how much rare items leave Japan to foreigners and this can cause great resentment among Japanese collectors.

We also make their prices go up, because we pay more than they will.

So image if all of the Japanese were buying up baseball cards, or rugby memorobilia and that is how popular we are....

There's also a CERTAIN COLLECTOR who ruined all foreigners reputations in the 1990's in Japan, and is a big reason why you can't get stuff off yahoo Japan anymore from america.

I would like to hear about this story. What did this person exactly do that gave us all a bad reputation?

It may not hold true for collectibles but Japanese have had a far worse reputation for skewing markets far longer than us. Look at properties in Hawaii. Most of them ate it in the long run, but still. There are plenty of other scenarios as well, mainly in the 80's in the Japanese bubble.

While the current state will probably miff the occasional Yahoo bidder, the vast majority of stuff on Yahoo doesn't even get bid on. The sellers of course, for the most part, welcome it. Look at Akihabara, it is the single largest collection of tourists in the country, save maybe Asakusa and Roppongi.

    It isn't just with videogames.

People who have imported rare JDM classics like KPGC10 Hakosuka GT-R's, 2000GT's, and CPS Silvia's have gotten DEATH THREATS from Yakuza and irate complaints from Japanese private collectors for removing such "national treasures" from their homeland.

Screw that, the Yakuza can come get me, lol, I want a PGC10, of course I'll be settling for a much tamer and less uncommon L20-powered GT model.

that's pretty lame and stupid, i live in taly and am a huge car enthusiast, but i'm not mad at all the japanese collector for having beautiful and rare italian cars as long as they're kept with care

about the hakosuka, never heard of this car before, googled a bit and found a butt ugly car, but boy, what a great sound !

    Insanity.

I can just imagine how that scenario would play out, "Oh, hello there Mr. Yakuza thug; I would like you to meet a dear friend of mine, Mr. Mossberg 590. Would you like to get acquainted?"

I know who that collector is, but I don't think he singlehandedly changed the way they view this. Most sellers never shipped internationally anyway, and there was always an issue with the language barrier. Now that everyone is watching Yahoo Japan, I stopped when I was big into it in the late 90s....

You stopped Yahoo Japan when you were big into it in the late 90's? It had just started. '98 if I'm not mistaken.

Please PM me the dirt. :)

I can take a stab, but won't. Someone's going to have to PM Assembler if they want to know... I don't think he's following this thread. He's probably bathing in stacks of consoles.
