I'm a bit confused about the Japanese Dreamcast demo discs. I hope you can help me. After a few months the official Japanese DC magazine got restructured. The name changed and it contained stuff about the latest consoles back then. But when did this happen? Spring 1999? Or even earlier? My second question mark is: where can I find a accurate list with all demo discs ever released? Which were released under the first name and as "Dorimaga"? Or was Dorimaga the only demo GD in Japan?
Dorimaga is an acronym (or whatever) for Dreamcast Magazine (in japanese phonetics, of course). Each of the major publishers had their own DC-only magazines (Famitsu DC, Dengeki DC, and something else I'm sure I'm forgetting) but I don't know if any of them had demos in them. Most likely not. Dorimaga was definitely better. If you want a list of all of them, well, good luck. Here's a thread that will help though. http://www.gamengai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2611&hilit=hibaihin
There's a list + contents of all Dorimaga and Dreamcast Express discs on Segagaga - http://www.segagagadomain.com/dreamcast-d.htm
Thank you for your help so far! DoriMaga is short for: Dorīmukyasuto Magazine, afaik. I already own 6 Dreamcast Express discs + the "Extra" one. But they were send out exclusively to Dreamcast Partners. I'm looking for the demo discs (GD-Rom), which came in magazines. So, if I would start collecting Japanese Dreamcast demo discs, this will be my list? - Dorimaga vol. 1 -12 - Dreamcast Express 1 - 7 - Dreamcast Express Extra But how about the "Promotion Discs" and such "Dreamcast Magazine" GD's??
These are the only other ones i'm aware of Biohazard Code Veronica Trial D2 Shock Frame Gride Test Operation Disc Jet Set Radio Sample Project Berkley Disc (Not a playable demo) Sonic Adventure 2 Trial (Phantasy Star Online Version) Sonic Adventure 2 Trial (Instore Version) What's Shenmue (There are 2 versions of this, blue and orange, both the same contents though AFAIK) Zombie Revenge Sample
I have an issue of Dreamcast Magazine (JPN) 12/24/99 it has a Volume 4 GD-ROM of D2 called the first touch, I don't think it is the same as D2 Shock
It's not, D2 Shock came first with copies of Real Sound Kaze No Regret about 8 months before the game was released and features an earlier version of the game, D2 The First Touch came out with Dreamcast Magazine the month the game was released (but still has some minor differences).
Thanks for the info, I have and I've played D2 Shock but the one on the magazine is still sealed in the mag and I've yet to try it!
I try to focus only on the demo discs, at least for now... The above mentioned discs are interesting but were not send out by magazines. Except the orange "Famitsu" Edition of What's Shenmue and the Eternal Arcadia @barai Edition (blue paper sleeves). The Test Operation Disc was also included to the Dreamcast Express vol. 2. Maybe this one counts too. I wrote "Promotion discs" because of this label: www.segagagadomain.com/dreamcast-ntsc_0/dreamcastmaga-april.htm @Meringues: Interesting... I guess it's like the June (issue of Dreamcast Magazine) demo disc: www.segagagadomain.com/dreamcast-ntsc_0/dreamcastmaga-may.htm @Kron: OK, thanks.
Well, those discs are demo discs, just not magazine demos. The only magazine in Japan that had demos i believe was Dreamcast Magazine and Famitsu had that Whats Shenmue disc, i don't believe Famitsu ever did any other Dreamcast discs. I hadn't heard of Eternal Arcadia @barai Edition though. The differences between First Touch and the final version are pretty small. Kimberly talks to you when you're aiming during the hunting tutorial (which might actually be in the final Japanese version, i can't remember now), the Hares are called Rabbits, and when you enter into battle a sound effect is played that isn't in the final version. That's it. You get the in-game intro, cabin section, and can run around outside, but if you enter the stone hut or go towards either of the paths (to the mining facility or plane) the demo ends. The only other thing you can do is watch the trailer for the game or the opening CG movie. I'm a D freak :stupid:
Yeah, heres a quick and dirty scan of the cd sleeve: Have to admit, I'm a bit of a D freak too :wink-new:
Be sure to check the detailed photo of Vol.2 on segagaga, since there are 2 disks for Dorimaga vol. 2

Oh, you broke my heart Kron, you showed part of your list here and you didn't want to show me when I asked you.... just joking, I'm glad I can see some of your list at last EDIT: By the way, I've seen them all except *Soul Calibur Famitsu Wave (White disc) 610-7175 Do you have any photos of it?
I was going to say check out my sites www.segagagdomain.com for information on DC demo discs but it seems there's already. Lots of good info in this thread.
Thats not even 10% of the list so don't worry I'm keeping it back until Ive got all 260+ It came packaged with the Famitsu Wave special issue 'Soul calibur official experience guide' from July 23rd 1999 and the Magazine and disc had an 840 Yen RRP.
Thanks for the pic! I'll be on the lookout for it By the way do you mind if I ask you something more? Do you own japanese mags, do you collect them?
I've only really collected the early ones from 1998/99 and some of the later ones that were interesting or that had a disc attached.
It has been Dreamcast Magazine from DC Launch to mid 2001 when the mag went multiplatform. Since then it has been Dorimaga until it eventually got renamed again in 2006 or so. The included demo discs have been labeled Dorimaga from very early on (if not from start) regarding best magazine: the dreamcast magazine is quite nice and some good info can be found within it's hundreds of issues. However, good info which is not common internet knowledge is really sparse. But it is pretty western friendly to skim through for a japanese magazine, with tons of pictures (way too many) and not that much insight info. Other downside is that it has a big focus on dating sims, especially in the later issues which more or less consist of pictures of those and info about j-pop girl groups, but it has been there from start I personally prefer the famitsu dc for better info, it is a much more serious magazine with a much better text to picture ratio (and no special focus on dating sims), though it is pretty tough to get your info if you can't read japanese. (i can't either safe for the Katakana which is not japanese anyway, so it's always a hassle). It only had way less demo discs included (not that dreamcast magazine had that many aswell)
