Yesterday I saw shocking news on TV that the Japanese goverment are saying that they have lost records of pention payments for about 50'000'000 people! They then went on to say that unless you have the proof that you paid you won't get a penny. That's just fucking outrageous ! Who in hell would keep reciepts for 50 years ! I sure as hell hope this goes to the world court or something. They can not do this at all. Of course there are those within the goverment that say they should just pay EVERYONE who is at the pention age. True some buggers who never paid a penny will get a pention but that's a hell of a lot better that stiffing 50'000'000 people ! Yakumo
What news reported this? I drained my pension when I went to Hawaii. I got X amount back (I'm sure it worked out to about 60% of the total), but that money has made roughly 10% per year since (2.5 years total) so I'm quite happy. You should save your money like you will get NOTHING when you retire. I'm considering any social security from either country a bonus. Right now, I won't get much. Japan's = 0, US = only about 3 years worth of contributions. Also: Your employers, if they're still in business, should have all the forms you need. Not to mention your old tax forms will prove what you paid. You'd only need to keep 1 per year, which you should be doing anyway. I somehow don't think this will work though. If they lost those records, they'd have no way of busting the millions of people that don't pay into the program. Koizumi got caugh, while the PM, for not paying into the system.
It was on last night. Could be connected to the suicide of the health minister or as they suspect a killing by the Yakuza who were hired by another politician. Being a British citizen in Japan is actually pretty good since we can still get the full basic pension with only having to pay 380 odd pound a year under the voluntary contributions section  I have that and the Japanese pension however I don't trust the Japanese government one little bit since they seem to do whatever they want because they know your average Japanese won't say a word OH: Yakumo
The pension scandals just keep rolling along nicely! Somewhere are a bunch of fat cats laughing their asses off as the people who've paid get stiffed. The UK Government has done little to reassure pensioners (and current contributors) that their employers schemes are secure. You can of course go for a 3rd party scheme, but even they have been found lacking. Without someone investigating and reassuring people that their hard earned funds are secure and your rights are being fought for, then people will not maintain or contribute to pensions. Net result.... 30 years from now the Government of the day will be wondering why it can't balance it's books and where all of these old people are coming from cup in hand. As for the Japanese example.... h:
bastards! they re relying on people's error (of not having proof perhaps) in order to cut money! that'c a hit below the belt!
It's not just pension (although they are scam artists). It's almost all politicians. If you're interested in a look of basically everything that's wrong with Japan, read "Dogs & Demons". It's purely the pessimistic side, but it's pretty fucking scary.
Same with the US and Social Security. Most of us and younger might not even be getting social security! We might be paying back china for the loans the US is taking out.
I actually did the math and with my current degree I'd be in better financial shape declaring bankruptcy than I would be in if I paid off my student loans. for institutionalized education! Sorry OT.
That's why you go into degress that are in demand, like lawyers, doctors, accountants, engineers (involved in construction/civil). But with current bankruptcy law, you cannot include student loans, even private school loans.
