I have seen some of the more well known Japanese horrors but im sure theres loads i have missed however i have no idea which ones they are, so does anyone have any recommendations? So far i have already seen.... Ring Ring 2 Chakushin Ari Chakushin Ari 2 Exte Ju-on Ju-on 2 Dark water Prefer not to see any western remakes, my ideal scenario is just the original film with english subs as i hate dubbing of any kind. So what else is there to see that i have missed???
Noroi - brilliant documentary within a documentary. It has some fantastic moments, and a satisfying ending (rare in J-horror). Elsewhere Uzumaki - best adaptation of Junji Ito's work yet. Kairo - One of my favorite films of all time. The descent into chaos comes late in this one, but when it comes it is fantastic. Ones to not bother with: Any of the Guinea Pig series Any of the Tomie series.
Thanks for the suggestions Wakaria, found them on ebay pretty cheap so i got your suggestions as well as a few others... Noroi Kairo Cursed (hehe conveni horror) Ring 0 Also bidding on Uzumaki, hopefully it will stay super cheap. Seems like not all dvds made it to uk region 2, i could only find the hk region 3 version of noroi but it has english subs so im ok with that. Whats Shikoku like? Worth getting??
Shikoku - is a bit lifeless (LOL) It isn't really horror as such, more a "tale". Not bad, but only worth it is you have a decent grasp of Buddhism. 3/10 Marebito - is worth a look, but is again a little bit dull. It has such a good premise that it is 100 percent worth watching, but it just doesn't do the concept justice. 5/10 Some more unconventional ones from me (I am a big horror fan). Funny ones: Electric Dragon 8000V - A real classic of Tokusatsu fun and one to just let sweep over you Wild Zero - Hilarious zombie film with a great soundtrack! House - fantastic surreal piece that will blow your mind. Serious ones: Cure - watched this last night as it happens. Very uncomfortable viewing about a hypnotist serial killer Bullet Ballet - AMAZING. Dark, brooding and very satisfying. Enjoy!
Bullet Ballet is a great one. Anything by Shinya Tsukamoto is... while we're at it, why not also mention Tokyo Fist! Not exactly horror, but really intense. Also by Shinya Tsukamoto is HAZE, which has quite a surprising ending and is a great trip despite it's so short. I did not enjoy Marebito - the idea is amazing, but that's all.
Kwaidan - While I dont consider it a horror movie, it is a very well done collection of ghost stories. Three ... Extremes - That first story.......
The first story from Three...Extremes is from Fruit Chan and a HK-movie. The one by Takashi Miike (the 3rd) is a bit untypical, more like an ancient ghost story, but still very nice.
