    Shamelessly stolen from IGN
October 30, 2006 - What's worse than 100,000 units at launch? How about 80,000? The Nikkei Keizai Shimbun morning edition reports today that due to component shortages, Sony will have only 80,000 units ready for the PS3's 11/11 Japanese launch. This cuts back by a fifth the initial launch target of 100,000.

The lack of digits in that number is even more staggering when you consider that the PS2 sold out of nearly a million units when it launched back in March of 2000.

Having lived through a few weeks of attempting to obtain a PS3 pre-order, we're not too surprised by the lowered shipping numbers. Allocations disappeared quickly at online retailers that were brave enough to start pre-order programs. The online arm of media retailer Tsutaya ran out of units in 6 minutes according to Nikkei (it felt more like 1 minute to us).

Major electronics chains like Yodobashi Camera won't be taking pre-orders, Nikkei reports, so there's only one option left: line up the day before launch. Although with fewer units to go around, we're considering getting in line starting from the week prior.

Hahah -- this won't work. Even with a million units for the PS2 launch, the lines started TWO days before launch. So glad the PS3 lineup sucks. One less thing to worry about.

Serves them right for delaying the PS3 for so long just so they could ram BluRay down everyones throat.

Lol seriously there are people going to queue for a week to get a PS3??? And with the launch line up ahahahahah I think the dude is more likely to die of boredom after he got his PS3 adding to the fact that his PS3 may not make the first week hum... he may die twice...poor dude.

Or maybe this time Sony is going to pay some dude to queue for a week just to nurture the hype. We just got 1080p and HD-DVD support on the 360 this morning who needs a PS3??? You can get it easiliy and not die of hypothermia.

I imagine their face when they get home after a week and plug-in their brand new PS3, with some games, just to find out it's boring and dull after 10 minutes or so:p

nah, PS3 doesn't run on batteries. We can bash it all we want, at the end of the day it isnt a bad piece of hardware though. Whether or not it will be a good game platform will be evident in the games and people's preference.

I still see sony as the number one player at the end of this race (I expect the wii to lose steam badly after 2 years or so, just like the cube before it)

You don't need to worry about the PS3 blowing up. The battery powered wireless controllers on the other hand...

I didn't know the PS3 JPN launch was before the US one.

Can't wait to see coverage of that......I can't imagine the lines. Anyone here in Japan going to go snap some pics of the insanity in Akihabara?

of course, thats why many people still play their older systems frequently, and thats why emulation has become so popular. Quality games are like a good book, they never get old.

With the support of the Ps3 however, its bound to have some must-have titles. Too bad I can't afford one anytime soon.
