Just got an MP3 player (Sony NW-A857; 64gb flash media player)
Why buy from Japan? Cheaper and has no European volume limit (due to EU regs)

Now whats the problem you may ask?

Its in Japanese and I cant find the language setting (If there is one!!) I can use the thing, but it would be nice to play with the options

Thats the 'settings' page where the language allegedly is:
Which is it, or does anyone know this specific model???

    thanks :)

can't you take a better picture? The 2nd and 4th options from the bottom are impossible to read. One of them maybe the language option though. to tell the truth, even if you can't read the Japanese you can find out easy enough by just entering each option and seeing what it does.

Click on one until you see it say "English". I've never seen anything that can be switched to English not say it in English. Or, as Yakumo suggested -- take a better photo.

I have :( My Sharp TV downstairs says Language in Japanese. Pretty stupid if you don't know the kanji. Still, I have to take my hat off to them for such an excelent English system. My Toshiba upstairs is Japanese only which was a pain in the arse when it came to sorting out the gaming options. Evn my wife could tell me what they wrote. Then again she's not too good when it comes to technical stuff. Oh, my panasonic HD video camera has language writen in Japanese too :(

Most portable items such as phones, MP3 players and so on should have language written in English though.

My Sharp TV says "bilingual" in katakana. It's brand new though, and I love it.

    Nah, docomo say "$B%P%$%j%s%,%k(B" too.

lol, I thought it was a thread about "japanese speakers", you know, music boxes, audio systems, japanese brands and the thread would go deep about quality japanese products regarding audio.

    There's already a translation thread. =3

    All:

Apologies for the crap pic, having issues getting my SLR to talk to my Mac so i had to take the picture with my webcam :)

I tried blindly rooting in the menus - couldn't find 'English' and thought it might be in Japanese until selected. Having done a bit more digging on the web:

Looks like ill hold out for a firmware update... Great MP3 player though :)

    Thanks all

Those sony walkmans usually come in nihongo nomi. I have a predecessor of that model with 1seg & stuff.

The biggest pain is to get the sonicstage software work properly on english PCs, since they have abandoned the kaigai version already in like 2004 or so, and compatibility to later player is not really what I like to call that mess.

    Me too! lol.

He could still need some Japanese speakers to plug into his Japanese MP3 player, though ;-)
