I played through Vanquish recently and loved it. The 3rd person shooter seems to be the domain of mostly US developers. Here was a Japanese developed game that just knocked it out of the park in terms of gameplay, control, everything. It put alot of US developed shooters to shame in my opinion or at least on notice on what to go for. The reviews have been mixed but screw reviews. The game is insanely good.

There are a few really good US developers as well as the fly by night design for whats popular shovelware devs. These exist in Japan as well, but what do you think is the real difference between a US developed game and a Japanese game? What do you think differs in how they design games?

The majority of US devs seem obsessed with multiplayer but the japanese devs just want a solid single player experience with multi player as a bonus. Do you have a preference when you hear about a game and which country developed it?

I want a game with a great single player experience.

    So primarily Eastern games.

That said, I don't care where a game comes from as long as it's good.

And I played the Demo of Vanquish and holy hell.
I also think this game is quite amazing. It's crazy.

I need to get Vanquish. The demo was mind-blowing. Super fun, too.

In the 80's and 90's US developed games were pretty much guaranteed to be shit. European ones were decent but the best came from Japan. These days however there are some fantastic western developed games while many Japanese games seem to be stuck in some sort of time warp. Saying that there are still some killer games coming out of Japan and those games are ones that really push the boat such as Vanquish.

    Hello everyone,

I would say that good games can come from Japan, America, anywhere. A company that takes their time developing a game can come from anywhere.

Those are the good games. Hopefully we will see some more great games coming out.

    Bye.

There are these countries called the "United Kingdom", "France", "Finland" and to a degree "Canada" that have made some fantastic games too. Personally I get bored of the amount of FPS games that get released, it does seem at times that 2 out of every 3 games on the Xbox 360 is an FPS.

It's just the current market trend. every generation has it's trends. This just happens to be FPS games.

I wouldn't say it's as many as that in recent times. There seems to be a fair few 3rd person shooters now which I do like much more

This may sound awkward but most Japanese titles usually felt to me like they were made with passion, like most of them were the developer's labour of love.

US games mostly felt like they were mostly made with profit in mind.

I feel like a lot of US and Euro-developed titles get overly hung up on feature set as opposed to "feel".

Although, this is due in large part to the fact that US games are very heavily slanted towards the multiplayer/FPS genre, which I don't give a flip about, and so I totally tune out when people start talking about map packs, achievements, simultaneous players, etc.

I agree. This is so true that some japanese companies are hiring western devs to make their games. Ex: Konami hiring MercurySteam to make Castlevania Lords of Shadow

A nice comparision would be Forza vs. Gran Turismo. While i think Gran Turismo is a better racing game overall (that's just me though), Forza has many features GT fans have been asking for ages.

Forza has some exotic cars that are nowhere to be seen on GT. Instead, it appears that Kazunori thinks kei cars and stuff like Daihatu Midget to be a worthy addition to the game car list.

Rockstar being a UK brand, Lionhead studios, just to name a few.

We're full of decent developers in the UK.

The Yanks must games about War and stuff like that, Whilst the Japanese go for the 'WTF Factor'

I get the sense that he may have meant console titles, as most of that stuff, or the best versions of the games from those developers, were on PC.

Don't mean to put words in his mouth, but that's my opinion. The US had very strong PC development in the 90's.

Console wasn't AWFUL, but definitely behind Europe and certainly Japan.
