So a few years back I found out my Japanese PS2 wouldn't use component, in the end it turn out it has some kind of RGB force installed in it. Seeing as the machine still worked we just let it be and use RGB, however two years later and despite mainly sitting in its box for most of the time the CD drive has packed up.

It's appears the CD drive / laser isn't getting up to speed and we think it might be the switch at the back. However seen as the drive isn't working we decided to take the darn thing apart to work out what mod chip is installed and two to find and remove the RGB force.

It was bought second hand so we never installed it and I could never work out why it didn't play USA/EU PS1 games only Japanese PS1 tiles. It did play EU/USA/JP PS2 games however.

I'm guessing it's a early chip for the PS2 as it did trigger the security in some Japanese PS1 games.

    Here's the pictures:

From some quick net searches the second board appears to be a diode fix and that may well be part of the problem from what I've read. Something about it supposed to stop laxer burn but doesn't and still breaks the laser after time time. GREAT[IMG]

Similar problem and mod to this guy's PS2 I notice:

Suggestion for a possible fix would be great and I welcome the help from fellow members. As I'd prefer not to have to buy a new USA & Japanese PS2 if the mod is indeed rubbish.

From Google, its shape looks like a Modbo 760's. Some modchips have a special mode for PlayStation games, so perhaps you need to trigger that? Or maybe it just wasn't installed properly.

    Cheers for that.

Anyone know the best place to get replacement laser from and CD drives? Currently when you put a disc in it just makes a slow whirl sound then does nothing after that can't read the game or even tell a disc is in the drive. It's totally gone by all accounts, my question is it worth me replacing the drive with this diode fix and current mode chip still in. Or will it burn out again in a year or two?

What's the best MOD chip now out there for the PS2? As I'm guessing this on installed in my machine is well out of date.

Anyone got a clear idea of what needs to be removed to get the component working again?

Someone else should probably be answering your questions. IMO the optical drive wouldn't last forever anyway. Not just because you're using a SCPH-70000 series (which has the problem of the MECHACON crashing), but because it has a lifespan.
I guess that the usual advice to not mod it/don't use burned discs should help. But if you want to do modding, the PIC fix should be better than the diode fix.

Not sure if you're getting my messages over on bordersdown mate.

I've got spare lasers, assembly's, motors etc so am happy to take a look at it for you if you pay postage.

Failing that, I can sell you any spare parts if you know which laser you need. If you're not sure, just upload a picture on here of the laser.

Cheers, sp193 I ownly used official discs on it, never burns the main reason I purchased a modded machine was to play USA NTSC games without having to buy a third PS2. Interestingly even when I first got it some years back I noticed that the odd game had ghosting in it not, present in an unmodded machine, which suggests something was out of sync to begin with or the mod was just a bit pants. As the machines hasn't seen a huge amount of use compared to my PAL PS2 which works fine, I'm really questioning the quality of this diode fix.

I got your messages Jei, I'm just keeping all my options open right now and trying to gather as much information as possible about the problem before I decide what to do with it.

    No worries.

Well it's not a 760 (despite being on a similar looking board)

I'm almost convinced it's running Messiah Firmware (therefore cheap messiah clone) which explains why you don't have access to any MI menu's, loading screens are unchanged and component isn't working as messiahs didn't support it being enabled, there's no RGB force and would never need there to be.

Lasers - aliexpress probably the cheapest, make sure to get the matching one.
