Since Nintendo are dickheads and blocking the Freeloader off the bat and aren't open to region Freeness I've considered getting a Japanese wii so I can play a few of those Japan Only Wii games that we'll never get coughharuhicough But the Main thing is what about Wii Points? Do I just get Japanese Wii points to download VC content or can I use wii points from anywhere? I'm just considering it at the moment. Came up in a convo with a friend of mine.
I understand sometimes companies region lock the country of origin on some CCs and it sounds like something the assholish Nintendo would do.
Actualy it does. Sony locked Credit cards to region for PSN when early on too many people were buying stuff like tekken off the HK store. So to buy japanese games you need a japanese credit card or a master card that does not force address verification (not common but poisble. most virtual master cards are like this). Most likely nintendo does the same.
I believe that Wii points are locked to region. As for getting them, you can buy the points cards from on-line shops like play-asia.com - I got a 5000 points card there (which came with a free classic controller) when they were running one of their sales.
You can use a uk card (tried visa) to buy wii points from the JPN store. Presume it's the same with american cards. You just need a CC number, expire date and a CCV code. No need for an address. Points are locked between regions and gifting games to people is also region locked.
So far the only person on the thread that makes no sence is you. Also if you ever ordered anything from japan you would know that companies over there seem to try their best to stop anyone from outside ordering anything. e.g rakuten (Which seems to form a majority of the sites i want to order from)
Some personal experience: After I read your post I became curious. So, I registered one of my credit cards with Nintendo, providing them with the usual info. The thing is though, I live in EU, and I have a US console - my MasterCard is also linked to my UK address. So, what did I do? simple: where it asks for your billing address, you can just lie - you have no obligation to provide your true address. I entered 90210, Beverly Hills, CA , from the infamous TV show Also, considering the downs of the USD, I purchased 50 USD worth of credit (5000 Wii points) for 25GBP - which is great, considering the UK equivelant is 0.75 instead of 0.50 that I paid for every 100 Wii Points - that's a 50% discount =)
Small note but some mastercards dont induce address verification. They did on my visa tho but it was not a big issue.
