Stuff like this is what makes me dislike Japan to be honest. He's just a fad singer and utterly disposable.

Yep, like EVERYTHING in Japan, he's just a fad. Each year brings a new "Gaijin" fad along with some Japanese prick who thinks he's funny yet not. Here today, gone tomorrow is the way for most things in Japan.

I do agree though, Jero is a good singer  puts all those rapping idiots to shame.

I'm not in Japan but I've heard his music. He's talented that's for sure, but it strikes me as the type of thing that is just a novelty. You see him, and assume you're in for some rap or r&b shit, and then he starts belting out some enka.
If he wanted to be taken seriously as an enka singer, a dying breed anyway as far as I can tell, he wouldn't dress like an american rapper. He adds to the novelty, which is why it seems like more of a gimmick than any sort of substantial interest from Japan.

Side question - aside from the older generations, does enka have any real presence in today's Japan?

Whenever I heard of or saw a younger person listening to enka, they are usually driving a dekotora.
