I was thinking: what about getting a job in one of those western subsidiaries in japan?

I bet my chances are higher than in a japanese company, right?

So, anyone here has some knowledge in this area?

I have a friend that wants to live in Japan for a while. He accepted a job at a major international company that has offices all over the globe. He accepted the job on the condition he could relocate to their Japan branch after a year.

Great idea, I was thinking to aply to work in a western car company there, like Peugeot, Citroen or MINI (to name a few that I know are there).

Maybe (in the case of mini) I could pull that same trick. After all, how many of their employees know any japanese?

Hell, how many know any other lenguage besides english?

You generally have to be the top of your field to get transferred to abroad. Of course it varies from each company. I know someone who is the most high maintenece person you could imagine that got transferred as a temp, if you can believe that. Weird things do happen.

It's still easist to get a job w/ these firms IN Japan, as a resident. And as for working at one of them as opposed to a Japanese company: well.. if you enjoy things like a fair wage and a mere 40-50 hour work week, you will surely find your way to one. I made the mistake of interviewing at a Japanese company. The position demanded native English, high level Japanese, Photoshop and desktop publishing skills. At the time there was probably 8 people in Japan that had all of those. I went to the interview, and the old fucker told me I was making too much money, despite the fact I was making minimum wage for a working visa (250,000 yen a month).

Dunno maybe he was the "mop master"

And yeah, my original objetive was to go there and get a job interview. On the other hand I dont think getting a tranfer to japan is that hard.

Is that japan isnt exactly a "hot" place to go. Is not like being tranfered to Paris or Hawai. For most people just the lenguage requeriments are too high, and there no "compensation" like great weather, cultural heritage, etc..(yeah I know they are idiots, but is the narrow point of view many share in this culture).

For example there a friend of a freind who just got a transfer to taiwan: he was pissed, mainly becos he barely knows any chinese.

Anyway, 2,127 bucks too much?! pizzaboys make more than that...

How many times have I heard that !

. Yep, old bastards in Japanese companies that do sweet FA yet slag everyone below really piss me off. I've already had a go at one of the guys in my wife's company because he told her not to come back after having the baby. Reason being, mothers are unworthy of a job position. He soon changed his tune after out little chat though:nod: God, I really do despise those guys. Lazy shits !

Whoa what a fucking ass! I mean, "unworthy"? WTF? you need a lot of balls to work having a newborn to take care of. Maybe she wont be able to work as hard as she used to, but hell, isnt japan suffering due to low natality numbers?

The bastard should give her a bonus...

Low-end jobs are sometimes well paid in the states, specially those who nobody wants to do. For example, I heard the empire state's garbage cleaners get as much as $30,000 per month. Cool right? but you wont believe the kind of shit you can find in trashcans.

    I doubt it's $30K per MONTH.

$360K a year cleaning garbage? Maybe the execs, but not the man on the street.

Did you try those recruit companies? WORKINJAPAN.COM has a nice weekly newsletter.
I would love to try a position in a foreign companie in Japan, but English not being my native language doesn't help much...

Might I ask what you do, and what your qualifications are? The said thing was, most of my friends teaching were making the same amount of cash working half the time. Lots of time for private students to make another 100,000 yen or so a month. Also, remember the cost of living in Japan is obscene. I've come to realize that it's not uncommon for younger Japanese to mooch well into their 30's.

Yeah I know, but some places in europe are pretty expensive too. Even in spain which is still considered cheaper than france or germany, living costs are rising fast.

The last time I was there a bag of tomatoes was 4 euros...

It's the whole package you've got watch out for. The weakening yen has knocked Tokyo off the "most expensive city in the world" listing (I think it's #3 now) but it reigned for ages -- even after the bubble. The list is also based on expat lifestyle... something nobody here will be doing (that I know of).

To tell if it's expensive or not, you have to know what you'll make, and what you'll spend. London is a damn expensive city, but as I understand it, starting salaries for most college graduates is considerably higher than the sheckles Japanese get their first year out.

This makes me so glad I'm older now -- I think this is actually relatively recent, despite the reference to 1998.
The bonuses aren't quite so hot as they used to be, although getting a million yen is not unheard of. But at 800,000 yen, seems the "average" is still only make 2.8 million yen a year. That's like $22K USD.
