My collection habits are... stuff that catches my eye, and is available easily. It's entirely haphazard and random.

My most recent purchases have been Kolibri (32X), Knuckles Chaotix (32X), Dark Wizard (Sega CD), a pair of Famicom games, 4 random Atari games for a quarter each, the second Genesis I, Fantasy Zone The Maze (SMS), a Gyromite and Hogan's Alley I cracked open for a couple NES -> Famicom converters, all since last weekend, just because I happened to find them at various stores / flea markets in the area.

My play habits are equally random. Normally I don't have a lot of time to play, but because I had a vacation coming up, I had been saving cash by going out less (it's funny that collecting is usually cheaper than a night out at a bar), which meant more gaming. For example, yesterday, when I finished cleaning my apartment, playing guitar, and skateboarding, I played Motorstorm for a while, played through all of Sonic CD (well, got the "bad" ending, but I didn't want to spend ten hours going to the past to break machines), played Dark Wizard (Sega CD) a bit, played a game or two of Catan on Live Arcade, and played a few levels of N+ on Live Arcade, and played a few levels of R-Type Command for PSP (renting it from Gamefly right now).

Thanks. Looking at that link, it looks pretty similar to that RFGeneration site I found. You wouldn't happen to know the major differences between the two, would you?

It's pretty good. Typical Fantasy Flight / Ameritrash flaws and benefits. Tons and tons of weird rules to remember, but lots of awesome bits.
    Here's the BGG link : http://boardgamegeek.com/game/22827

I like Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition a little more, but Starcraft has its charm. Both games take 3 - 5 hours. Starcraft's action system takes a few games to stop messing up. Everyone puts action coins face down on the board, and then takes turns picking an action. Everyone always gets thrown off because you resolve things top down, and a lot of players end up putting their token stacks backwards.

Combat does not feel like Starcraft at all, but I like it a lot more than a straight dice roll a lot of combat games do. Each player has a hand of combat cards, listing a couple units and two sets of scores : the higher score applies to the units on the card, the lower score applies to any other unit. So if your units match your cards, you'll hit harder.

If you weren't aware, and wanted to try more video game / board game crossovers, there is a Doom boardgame (my copy is at work). Descent (a generic fantasy dungeom romp) came out after Doom, and greatly refined the combat system. There is also a World of Warcraft board game, but I had some issues with that one, it felt like the two sides (Horde and Alliance) were playing two entirely seperate games and had to wait for the other side to finish. Fantasy Flight (the guys who made all the games mentioned so far) also has the rights to do a Gears of War boardgame, which should be interesting.

Looking through the images (I might be blind) but you you mention "The Wii isn't mine" yet I can't even see one?! Taken an image off or do I need new glasses? Good, varied collection there. Atari Jaguar.... I love the Atari Jaguar. I have a unit, but only 1 title for it and never use it. That pretty much sums te unit up, but I so wish Atari had succeeded with that machine.

    Thanks all.

I just tested those "broken" 2600s. 2 of them worked perfectly, one worked poorly, and two were actually broken. Turns out my old system was broken, too. One of the working ones might even be a heavy sixer.

I just finished cleaning my apartment (well, as clean as I'll ever make it), and updated the pictures. All that is missing is the dozen or so boardgames I have at work

Loving the picture at the end of the VB with the hat on

Do you have the Xevious boardgamer per chance? Its the only boardgame vg boardgame I have, and well, I've not put down the time to try to learn how to play it yet...

Nope, hadn't heard of a Xevious board game. Looked it up on BGG, and there's hardly anything on it :

I'm not sure what is wrong with the TI-99 yet, I haven't tested any of the old computers in that box yet, just the Ataris and Colecovisions.

So it's been a few months, so it's time for an update.

Since then I've added a few things to my collection:

I bought one of my grail games : Segagaga. And it's even better than I had hoped.
I bought one of my grail systems : NEO-GEO (MVS). Having a blast with it.
I've bought a lot of other junk.

However, I come to you with a problem that I hope you guys can help me solve. There's a careful balance in collecting between the size of a collection, and the available storage. My collection has exceeded my available storage for the millionth time, and instead of just buying more cheap Ikea bookshelves, I thought maybe you guys have some awesome solutions.

Here's pics of the mess everything is in right now (I'm leaving the old pics above as contrast, yeah, it wasn't that clean before, but it was cleaner):

Here's a few thoughts on my current storage thoughts.
-I really like having all my consoles out front and center. Very few are actually hooked up, which is probably the safe choice, but I don't think the cheap Target shelves I have can go much higher than they already are. Any suggestions for a safe way to keep as many systems as possible ready to be hooked up?
-Board games don't need to stay out with the video games, I don't ever play at my apartment, it's too small.
-Thoughts on arcade machines? There have been some really sweet deals on Craigslist I keep almost jumping on, but I'm afraid to buy one in a small apartment.
-The downsides of the cheap Target / Fred Meyer furniture I'm buying are becoming apparent. Yes, the bookshelf is only $30, but it doesn't come with enough shelves, and the shelves sag from just a few PSP and DS games. The red mini-shelves I have are $50 Ikeas, and the white shelves my PC boxes are on are Ikeas as well. These are much better built, but getting Ikea stuff is a hassle. It doesn't fit well in my car, and it's a long drive. I don't want to spend way too much money on shelving, but it's obvious that the cheap-cheap Target stuff needs to go.
-Controller / power cable / video cable storage has become a major hassle. No ideas how to handle this yet, except for a bigger plastic thing with more drawers.
-Memory card situation sucks right now, as well. I've got cards everywhere, for tons of systems.
-I have a roomate. Luckily it's my brother who's going to college out here, so he doesn't have a lot of stuff. He still wants a little more space in the living room, though.
-I'm really getting into this arcade stuff. This has brought up a short term issue, and a long term issue.
--My current supergun is garbage. I'm going to try and build two more, a small portable one, and a large at-home one.
--Storing MVS cartridges isn't a big deal, and if I branch into ST-V, or Atomiswave, it shouldn't be a big issue. But if I start going for straight PCBs, or CPS2s, things are going to get messy fast. Also, the 4-slot board takes up a lot of room.

Because I got my wisdom teeth pulled recently, and that's expensive, so it will be a while before I will put any of these plans into action. Which is perfect timing for me, because this thread will serve as both an incentive for me to clean this crap up, and hopefully have a lot of useful ideas by the time I get around to it.

Nice and varied collection you have there Joe, very impressive

About your storage and bookshelves problem, myself I just make my own shelving system out of 18mm MDF (or 'customwood/craftwood' in plain English?). Basically I just go to my utility shop and ask them to cut the MDF boards at the measurements I give them. Then I assemble the parts into a bookshelf and varnish it.

I've found it to be a cheap and sturdy solution and it looks nice when you use a transparant varnish (use 2 layers though, against scratches). Every few years I just make a new bookshelf and I keep that uniform design and look.

Recently I finished making a custom TV stand out of MDF with room for the 6 game systems I use the most. Add a nice comfy Ikea sofa and you're all set :icon_bigg

    Just a thought ;-)
