So I really love some of the colors of Gameboy player that were released in Japan. Wondering if I could use a US Gameboy player disc on a US Gamecube but with Japanese Gameboy player hardware? As I know all the Gameboys were region free. Are there any differences in GB player hardware depending on region or is it just the boot discs that were different?
Huh, I didn't know they were region-free. I always thought it was odd how Nintendo never released all the GBA adapter console colors to the U.S., but at least the colors can be paired with the imports.
Yes, it is very much the truth. The player itself is region free, but the disc is not. Example: If I live in the USA, I can order the Gameboy player hardware from Japan, then order a Gameboy player disc from the USA. Once I have both, I can attach the player to the GC, then insert the US disc and it will work. This means that I can actually play NTSC-J games from the Gameboy on my NTSC-UC GameCube. Its a simple, yet not well known exploit.
Yea, the Gameboy games themselves are region free. It doesn't matter what region your gamecube is, or what region the gameboy player disc is. Also, sidenote, calling Japanese Gameboy games NTSC-J doesn't really make any sense. NTSC and PAL get thrown around as regions, but they're differing video standards. The terms only make sense when comparing console games, not handheld games.
