I left my PSP charger behind at my brother's and I am not making a 100 miles drive (about 160Km) to pick it up. eBay or other online source would take a few days at best and I needed to recharge my PSP so I could play some more. Out of a dozen old unused 5v adapters (all for old USB hubs), none fit but I did have a correct sized tip from those generic adapter kit that comes with half dozen tips to switch around. 5 minutes of quick soldering and checking, I now have a Belkin branded 5v 2.5A charger for my PSP
^^ this. When I first got the PSP, it was dead and wouldn't charge from USB, only from power. If I keep my PSP charged until I got the original adapter back, I would have been fine but if I forget and left the system on, then it'd go dead and USB won't work at all. Plus USB charging is fucking slow on PSP. It takes all night before I can use it since PSP can't be used while charging off USB.
I have the opposite problem. I'm always in need of an ac adapter and a PSP/Vita ac adapter usually does the job.
The PSP has a USB 2.0 port. Up to USB 2.0, the maximum current allowed through the USB interface was only 500mA. That would mean that charging would be really slow, if it even works. Your mileage will vary, depending on what you are doing on your PSP and your PSP model. The PSP's charger is rated at 2A (2000mA), while the newer PSP-3000 series comes with a 1.5A adaptor instead. And from what I can remember, it only charges at the XMB. Once you go in-game, it stops. That is, unless you have a CFW and have the USB charging option (that applies to everything instead) enabled in it.
Pretty sure that's right, I just found the charger for my PSP-3000 after months of it being dead and found the same to be true. USB charging is near useless, and if it's dead forget it. Though I'm curious if a hardware mod running a wire from the +5V and ground lines of the USB port to the charge port. Using a diode for protection should a real charger be attached, would resolve this.
