OK thanks sp193. TEST PS2 is just a retail PS2 with ability to run games from any zone and boot programs burned on CD/DVD-R ? There is no others feature than this ?

Yeah. And it can't play DVD Video discs either. So you can say that it was designed for just testing software on retail-like hardware.

Ok. Another question, there is some issue to install freemcboot on a TEST. 30k can't boot from memcard, is there an alternative ?

No. You have to use a different console.... unless you install a modchip that can support "DEV1 booting". But lol... if you do that, you might as well use a CEX console. Those are more common and are cheaper.

Also, say if the laser goes on my DTL-H30001 (V3 or V2, 10 screws, never opened it to check exact model) it currently works flawlessly (surprisingly) right now but the CEX models of this model were notorious for disc read errors and my DEX variant likely suffer the same fate eventually, will a CEX console donor laser of the equivalent model (SCPH-3000x, V3 or V2, 10 screws once i work out to correct revision mobo and use the corresponding mobo version to my DEX) (Correct brand corresponding to my original laser of course) in essence the exact same hardware revision but a CEX donor be a suitable replacement or does it have to come from a DEX system?

Well. They're the same model (KHS-400B, as there were only B-chassis DEX sets), but the SONY service tool mentions that the service part is the "KHS-400B for DEX".

As there is an option to change the lens type (between the T487 and the newer T609K), I guess that you should be able to also fit a KHS-400C and re-calibrate the console with PMAP (or the SONY service tools).

Alright, if i were to switch laser type (either T487 to T609K or vice versa) would that require re-calibration or would it only if i upgrade it to a KHS-400C.

The KHS-400C likely has a T609K. The object lens was switched sometime when the KHS-400B was still the newest optical block model of the PS2.

The help file of service tools indicates that the technician is supposed to check and recalibrate the console whenever the optical block is replaced. But as you might have already known, that isn't something that is widely done outside of SONY.

Yeah, i kinda thought it was more involved calibrating the laser (Flashing EEPROM etc.) as opposed to simply replacing it with an identical replacement (Which i assume is commonplace)

Sorry to resurrect this thread once again, but i also managed to snag a DTL-H50001 cheaply yesterday, before i pull the trigger on a retail network adapter (I used to have one but it died somehow) are they compatible with the debugs straight up at all (Even with debug features unavailable) or do you need to get a specific "debug" network adapter mentioned in http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/playstation-2-network-adaptor-variants-list.44624/ for it to work at all?

Yeah, regular network adaptors should work on development consoles too. Personally, I am using a SCPH-10190 on my DTL-T10000H.

Contrary to their names, DEX consoles have no debugging features. Only the TOOL consoles do.

Hmm, i thought the newer DEX units (DTL-H5000x, newer DEX fats) had limited debugging capabilities.

IIRC, you have limited debugging capabilities in DTL-H1010x 3010x or 5000x consoles with Network Adapter when using the SCPH-10020 TDB Startup Card.

That being said, the concept behind the TDB startup card would have also worked on CEX consoles and it has nothing to do with the hardware (nothing really different from a CEX), so I wouldn't say that those models had debugging capabilities either.

Yup, agreed; I just meant to say that you could have limited debugging capabilities on (some?) DEX consoles if you used the TDB startup card, but as you mention, said feature is not provided by the console itself.

I see, well i don't have a TDB Startup Card anyways, but why would SONY create a network adapter specifically for DEX consoles if they function identically (Or appear to) to their retail counterparts? Namely the SCPH-10350 and another for debugs marked "For Debugging Station"
from http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/playstation-2-network-adaptor-variants-list.44624/ or was it just a way for SONY to milk the devs of money?

Well, they had a dev version of the mouse for PS1, so I'd say they were just milking money.
Another option is that the dev version of these accessories was kinda prototype, in the sense that they sold it to devs, devs did their thing, if something went unexpected they sent feedback to Sony, who in turn used it for the retail version of the accessory... but that's just my guess.

Yeah, I knew. I really just wanted to add onto what you wrote because the TDB startup card wouldn't boot on a CEX console naturally; it was specifically binded for a DEX, so no CEX would have ever booted one.

I do not know if the DEX expansion-bay network adaptor came in a bundle like the PC CARD bundle (DTL-H10030), but the HDD unit(s) for the DTL-H20400 don't seem to be exactly the same as the retail equivalent. At least, according to @TriMesh because he never got his to work with unpatched SONY software.

I guess that it is also possible that it is a SONY thing. For example, the replacement part for the B-chassis DEX is indicated within the elect service tool as the "KHS-400B for DEX".

IMO it isn't there to milk them of money because there is nothing that stops anyone from using a CEX network adaptor.

Or maybe it's a special release, which also includes regions that never got the network adaptor.

Reasons for specialty on dev hardware likely have to do with certifications and compliance testing for engineering rules and norms, which do vary from country to country or region to region... So you buy a retail PCMCIA HDD set, you get a 100v PSU intended to be used in Japan. If you buy the DEV set you get a special PCMCIA card with a little extension for the ethernet connector which allows it to fit comfortably on the T10k and a full range PSU (100-240V). Also the dev version of the HDD comes with a extra set of ferrite beads for allowing it to comply with different region requirements for EMI interference emissions.
