Hi all I have just dipped my toe into the murky/scary world of the AES and wanted advice regarding a few cheap games to get me going. Having read a few topics about games there always seems to mention of the 'cheap' games which I would be interested in getting so i can start off slowly. I know 'cheap' in AES terms is relative but there does seem to be a few games, in the states at least, that fit the bill. The following titles seem to be cheap as in under $20.00 (cart only is fine no need for the box etc) Samural Shodown/Spirts 1 Samural Shodown/Spirts 2 Magician Lord Art of Fighting World Heroes Fatal Fury Special Fatal Fury 2 I hoped maybe those more knowledgable could maybe knock up a little list of good starter/cheap games to get for the system? maybe a mix of genres too as I don't really want reems of fighting games (I know then why did I get a AES?!) so anything non fighter is especially appreciated thanks guys Rob
A Japanese copy of Last Blade will cost you about £60 - 70, which is well worth it for one of the best fighting games ever. Japanese Real Bout Special will be about the same. Although most of the games actually worth owning will cost you over £100, and in some cases a fair bit more. If you wanted a cheap Neo Geo, you went for the wrong one. You'd probably be better off with a consolized MVS.
Hi I didn't want cheap Neo Geo per say I just wanted a few cheap games to get me going instead of blasting £170.00 on just viewpoint to start with. I did consider going for the Neo Geo CD but the AES came up at a good price so went for that instead. I will probably keep it for a while then sell it when the Neo Geo X comes out. I travel a lot so a handheld is easier. Any advice on half decent budget game is still appreciated Finally own a Neo Geo after 20 years of coveting them nice! Thanks
All the games you have listed are worth getting, the early releases of King of Fighters are a good and cheap buy too. The Super Sidekicks football games are really fun arcade style sports games, and its well worth picking one of them up. Robo Army, Burning Fight and Spinmaster are some of my favorites too. You can get a decent selection of Neo Geo games without spending a fortune, the games released in the first couple of years were produced in quite high numbers and are easily available, its the later games that cost a lot.
If I could give you some advice to NeoGeo that would be: 1. Go for a consolized MVS with unibios and set it to AES mode. It will give you cheaper games and the exactly same AES feel. 2. If 1 does not work for you, get a phantom-1 with the upgrade board to insure it will work with your AES system and get a 161 in 1 multicart. The multicart idea is also valid for idea 1. Or, even both ideas are not fit for you, get a yahoo japan auction proxy and buy the cheap AES games way cheaper.
Hi thought about console MVS but got an AES instead. I actually have been thinking about getting the Neo Super Converter 2 rather than the Phantom 1 as most of the reviews suggest the Super Converter 2 is the better unit, maybe you think otherwise? The price of MVS carts is way cheaper but I am a bit of a box whore! but saying that I really want to play metal slug and not have to sell a kidney to do so! thanks:encouragement:
You can always got shockboxes for your MVS cartridges. Shockbox are way bigger then AES boxes. It's way prettier in the shelf. About the converter I own the super mvs convertor 2 (yes it says convertor and not converter in the box), the one with red led, not the newest with blue led. It didn't work at all in my AES with all my 20+ MVS cartridges. But it seemed to work flawlessly in my friends AES. Mine is 56k serial, his is 96k serial. Mine is 5v his is 9v. Mine is revision AES3-4 his is AES3-5. But the scaling problems are there. With games like Last Blade and Samurai Shodown. We were arguing if that was a problem or not. I never saw such things with my CMVS but he said this scaling problems happen with his original Samurai Shodown. I'm absolute positive that the Super MVS Convertor II has scaling problems. Xian Xi from Neo-Geo posted a video on youtube showing that problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8II9Ets3DIY The phanton-1 with the upgrade board it known to be 100% compatible with all consoles and all games, including the multicartridges. The downside is that it's hard to find one. BTW, DavidG made the Daedalous a very limited run, and very expensive, 100% converter. This is the ferrari of the converters but in my opinion it is ugly as it's cartridge orientation is horizontal.
Nice collection you have there! I have seen both a Phantom 1 and Super Converter 2 for sale on ebay but the description does not say which revision they are. I have asked the seller but he has not replied so not sure at the moment. I would like one but at £200.00 I don't want to make a very expensive mistake!:sorrow: so will wait until I get more info before picking one up. Rob
It's not my collection I just typed shockbox on google. The only phantom 1 I see on ebay right now is from that french seller. That's a scam and that's the super mvs convertor II. Do not buy anything Neo Geo related from anyone in France. That's the best advice I can give you.
Thats odd it says the listing is in chesterfield derbyshire on ebay.co.uk. The seller is selling both types of converter. Thanks for the heads up though. Maybe I should just sell the AES and get a NGCD instead!:wink-new:
NGCD ? If you're planning on playing the games, not just putting the system on the shelf, then it won't be a good choice - arranged soundtracks is a good thing, but 45+ seconds loading times aren't funny at all.
NeoGeo CD is decent via emulation where load times are non-existent. It is a real shame that the NeoGeo CD was not designed with a memory upgrade in mind. It had alot of memory already but later title conversions still needed or would have benefited from more. Ofcourse loading times would still be pretty bad. Unless they could implement compression mainly for graphics so that graphics data could be loaded from the CD compressed and would be decompressed very fast to reduce the overall load time. Afterall the NeoGeo CD had a pathetically dated 1x (150kb/sec) CD-ROM drive. At 150kb per second filling the massive amount of RAM the NeoGeo CD had takes significant time. Anything to reduce that would have helped so much. Really the NeoGeo CD would have been way better than the AES, since games were much cheaper to produce, if you had more RAM and way faster loading. Plus you had CD quality music as an option.
I am still partial to a NGCD even with the issues there's just something nice about it, like all SNK stuff I guess. I used to play NGCD games through my Dreamcast and never thought the loading times were that bad. Does anyone know if the Dreamcast emu is worth getting again? did they ever get full speed and sound emulation on DC?
Do you own a xbox classic? If you don't, get one. Softmod or hardmod it. Install NeoGeo CD XDSL (not sure if that's the actual name of the emu). Get the NeoGeo pad2 for ps1, get a ps to xbox controller converter. Enjoy neo geo cd without loading times
Keep in mind that even if price guides list AES games as $20 or under, you'll always have to pay shipping for these cartridges (at least on *bay). Here's a recommended mix of genres for you to try: - King of Fighters 94 - NAM-1975 - Alpha Mission 2 If you want, you can purchase a 161-in-1 MVS cartridge with an MVS-to-AES converter. It'll cost you a few hundred dollars, but will also open up about 100 original games (plus some hacks) to play on your AES.
