So I just picked up a 40GB PS3 (no backwards compat - BOO!). Snagged it for a cool $150. Friend decided he would rather have a motorcycle instead of a PS3 that he had yet to take out of the box. Anywho, any recommendations for what to play? Also what mods are out there and is Linux worth messing with? The firmware on it is 1.92 and apperently I have to update before I can get on PSN. Is it any worth to try the Debug mod?
Go to the PS store and download the Uncharted demo. I tried it out and it convinced me to buy the game. It's got an air of adventure, similar to that of Monkey Island and the Flight of the Amazon Queen (all these games include a jungle etc) but plays like a less tactical Gears of War. Naughty dog has done an amazingly good job with animation and level layout. Very fun game.
I got bored of the demo, found it too much like a tomb raider wanna be and still had too many things that made me go, "wtf, are you stupid?" Although it is a glorified demo, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is still one of the purest driving games around and I loves it. Motorstorm is a great example of what the PS3 can do and is quite a fun racer, Gran Theft Auto 4 needs no introduction.
Heavenly Sword (if you can find it cheap on eBay as it's really short) GTA4 COD4 Burnout Paradise Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction Eye of Judgment (if you fancy something a little different) And don't forget, MGS4 is out soon.
The debug mode is not worth holding your system back for. It doesn't do anything. Perhaps one day it will allow you to play pirate games, perhaps not. But is that why you bought one? Download as many demos as you are able. That will give you a good idea. There are plenty of good games, and a lot of good ones coming soon. It's pointless me telling you, you can search for 1 minutes on google for top 10s etc. I am really enjoying GTA4 (with reservations - it was over hyped IMO) and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
GTA4 and Uncharted if you're into action COD4 if you like FPSs And Folklore for RPG fans. Anyway, a motorcycle?
Go to the kiosko (don't know how it's said in English, combini?) and buy the Playstation magazine, here at least, it comes with a Blu Ray with a fucking load of demos (20 demos per BR, or around that).
Indeed it's a program to work out how much money MicroSoft are losing every second with Vista and the Xbox 360. Seriously it would be nice if the PS3 could run this in a low power mode as burning up nearly 1KWH of power every 4 hours isn't too great...
Since you ask about mods, my 10 cents: 2.10 patches the FIFO vulnerability, that can be exploited for RSX access under Linux. If you want to mess with Linux and RSX stuff stay below that version. 2.35 introduce additional downgrade protection. Probably something like the 360s efuses. So even with previous Infectus dumps, you can not go back to i.e. 2.30 or 2.00. If you somehow would like to install an Infectus for downgrading, stay below 2.35. So far the debug hack is useless. You can not run debug code. Hard to say how long it will take before it might become useful. My guess is that it might take a while, since I guess an additional vulnerability will be required to exploit this fully.
If you have a good surround sound system.....get Uncharted Gameplay is good and sound etc is good as well Most places have given it a good write up as well
