Just paid .50 cents (fifty cents) for a TiVo sd-dvr80 ... Is that worthwhile?

    The unit is listed here:
    http://www.tivopedia.com/model-hughes-sddvr80.php

I do not have directv and therefore can't really test it aside from plugging it in and seeing if it POSTs to some sort if screen.

But anyone know of any sort of hacks that may be applied to this unit? Can it be flashed to work as anything else?

Hack it and use it a DVR, you should be able to free it of the custom firmware.

Well for that price... I would buy something computer-related even if I didn't really need it!

You can flash it into a PS2 TOOL, I think. Or maybe that was my microwave...

All joking aside, I think I am stuck with (at best) a somewhat decent albeit six year old dvr...

I have a friend who has directv however without TiVo service I have no clue.

Also I know for fact directv no longer supports TiVo...

Sorry for this necro bump, but if the tivo is hackable without the big hassle.Cause some models has security measures, but if the Tivo you have is relatively hackable. And you know enough about Linux, then you can do some cool stuff with it, as far as I remember. Then a Tivo runs Linux, or at least some Tivos run Linux. So if you are okay with Linux, then see what you can do. Since it could be worth looking into.
