Here's the picture, I'm playing FF7: The most noticeable area is on the sea, it looks like crosses? The only reason I question it is I'm using a video converted and I wasn't sure if it was something produced by that. Thanks!
...I'm playing through FF VII right now and I'm pretty sure I'd notice that. I don't think mine dithers fierce like that. Edit: My save wasn't on the map screen, but the pre rendered blue background had no dithering
That's dithering. FFVII uses dithering on the World map, in combination with lack of perspective correction/depth buffers and mipmaps. Makes it very very pixellated.
I am using an RGB scart cable so that would explain it. Speedyink, I did take this super close on my TV, can you notice it really closely? I'm not too worried I thought it was normal, but scart to HDMI is a really nuisance.
Yeah, this horrid effect is quite normal on 3D PlayStation games. Take a look at Ridge Racer 4 for some nasty examples.
I'm only using composite on a CRT. I'll have to pay attention when I'm back at the world map. Usually I'm the type that notices this sorta thing, but maybe the combo of composite and CRT makes it not so noticeable.
Using composite NTSC video and a CRT TV is what the game was expected to be played on and makes those sorts of effects work. They don't look as intended with a RGB connection that doesn't get the NTSC treatment. Some games use a "mesh" or fence looking pattern that looks goofy over RGB but with NTSC it blends and looks kind of like its transparent.
