Not sure if theres a thread on these already (got an error on search?) But I've been looking into getting one of these for some N64, PS1 and Dreamcast gems on the go. With work I rarely find time to game anymore unless it's a handheld. I was just wondering what's peoples thoughts on these does anyone have one? And I wanted to know a bit more about the emulation state on it. Seen a few videos on YouTube of people running N64 and Dreamcast games from good to poor results depending on the game.
I have a jxd s7800b and it's ideal for emulation. But it does have its problems. The WiFi is pretty bad honestly; Works when it feels like it. The analog sticks aren't bad but can get uncomfortable after some time. Mine had a bad right speaker; Half the volume of the left one. The screen needed calibrating via an app, which made the device crash, but it did work lol. Understand that it is a Chinese device. It's good quality as far as Chinese devices go, but still isn't the best. Might be worth spending the extra money on an nvidia shield or something.
Thats the one specifically I was looking at and wow it doesn't sound great the way you've said it haha. Hows the N64 and Dreamcast emulation on it? Most games work okay? Nvidia Shields do look rad just a little pricey.
Let me do some tests and i'll get back to you. It's a complicated situation with emulators due to all the different settings and some games requiring various options enabled/disabled. Are there any games in particular you want me to test??
Cheers mate that would be great. N64 Conkers Bad Fur Day Diddy Kong Racing Banjo Kazooie Banjo Tooie Goldeneye Dreamcast Capcom Vs SNK 1 and 2 (either or really) King Of Fighters Evo Skies of Arcadia King Of Fighters Dream Match 99 Shenmue Sonic Adventure 2 Don't feel you have to do them all any of the demanding ones would be appreciated. Tried doing a bit of research online but a lot are with outdated emulators.
I'll try 2 ways. 1, using the built in software to download the rom and play it that way. 2, i'll use a separate emulator to see if it runs any better. EDIT: @JamesMichael Conkers Bad Fur Day, when ran from the download, works, but is slow. Using Mupen64, it runs between 10 and 25FPS. occasionally hitting 30fps (fullspeed). Not promising at all. Banjo Kazooie - Runs perfect on Mupen64 (except for framebuffer stuff, like the puzzle pieces on the transitions being black - not a game breaker at all). Goldeneye - Mupen64 - FEELS better than say, conker, but it's running around 10 - 15fps. feels sluggish, but not slow - strange. The Download version is unplayable due to no way of editing any settings and the controls are wrong. Plus it runs like crap. Maybe it can be sped up with Mupen64. Dreamcast Capcom Vs SNK millennium 2000 (only one on downloads) runs reallly good. Has a couple graphical issues, but its smooth and plays nice. Also able to edit settings on this game (the emulator looks to be the same as the download version for n64, but its got a settings button. Dont understand lol). Sonic Adventure 2 runs a little slow honestly. Its not terrible, but maybe setting changes will help it. Shenmue actually plays real nice, except theres a minor slowdown occasionally and the main character has some odd clippy issues. But the game is fully playable by the looks of it. I've used the PPSSPP emu too for PSP games, and, it seems to work pretty well honestly. Disgaea 2 works perfectly and i've played that for hours. I think it all boils down to the fact that, its powerful, but its android emulation. It's still young and theres plenty of room for improvement with 3d games. Configuring settings to get stuff working is tedious, but necessary. Older systems run perfectly. Even MAME Arcade games work nice on this device. Also, the button mapping feature works well for various touch screen games, which is nice. Doesn't replace a fingers movement though, unfortunately.
The JDX is too slow for high end emulation. High end phones can run N64 and Dreamcast full speed. My phone can and that's 1 year old now. I would use a powerful phone or tablet with a PS3 sixaxis controller and clamp to be honest. Full button mapping support is also possible. That's what I do.
I wouldn't buy a JXD now, they have stopped making consoles and there are better manfacturers out there, JXD were known for their quality control issues although mine have been alright. Try a GPD console, I had their G5A which was great (like an XBox 360 pad with a screen in the middle) and better than any JXD I have had. The XD is their latest console due for release any time now so wait for reviews of that before spending any money, it's basically a 3DS XL case housing an Android console (newer Rockchip RK3288) with Vita sticks. http://www.willgoo.com/presell-gpd-xd-pocket-gaming-tablet-rk3288-quadcore-5-ips-p-637.html If you want the gaming tablet format then their Q9 console is similarly specced. Analog sticks aren't as nice as the JXD you are looking at though.
Btw if you're looking for portable N64 emulation then there aren't any good options really, Mupen and N64oid aren't particularly good but will run the more popular games (Zelda OOT, Mario64, Mario Kart, Ridge Racer etc.) near perfectly, everything else is hit and miss though. The only good option would be a Windows tablet with an Ipega 9023 attached which will give you excellent (if cumbersome and ugly) portable N64 emulation. I tested some problem N64 games on mine (Paper Mario and Domkey Kong) and they ran great with all the fancy potions turned to max.
@AtomizerZero Cheers for taking the time out to test the games mate! Most to all games run fine then Yakumo? I was under the impression it was in fact the emulation and not the specs? Looks very close to the 3DS XL haha. Not that I'm complaining as the 3DS XL is a great handheld. @Yakumo would one of these lemmywinks be better spec wise? Now on the hunt for the perfect handheld for emulators. Any other links would be much appreciated. Got my eye on the GPD XD at the moment.
The Rk3288 in that GPD XD (and IIRC the Q9) are a fair bit better than the old JXDs which had the RK3188, the GPU is also quite a bit better. Not only are they more powerful they are also cooler and more power efficient. They're still kinda a mid spec soc, used heavily for the cheaper end of the Chinese market, pretty capable though. GPD also tend to make better quality consoles than JXD branded stuff (in fact GPD actually make consoles for a number of Chinese companies including JXD), my G5A was superb for the price with Xbox quality analog sticks. Some more points - Rockchip have cheated the Antutu benchmark tool so it gives way higher scores, I think the benchmark to use is Antutu X and it scores around 35-37000. Also pay little attention to clock speeds quoted by Chinese resellers as often they combine the CPU and GPU clocks or just make something up altogether. A lot of the time (read all the time) Chinese Android handhelds like these are underclocked from stock despite what is advertised, the GPD will probably run at 1.4ghz. May be down to heat issues however some people experience problems running them at full clock so maybe they go for cheaper soc deals with more lenient QC. GPD usually make good firmware too unlike JXD and they release sources to developers.
Do the JXD consoles use USB charging or that dreadful small DC plug that easily snaps? I myself have been considering buying one of these because my Xperia Play died.
They used to, my S601 charged via USB and the S7300 could also charge that way, however on the 7300 USB charging was very slow and would only keep the battery level if you were using it. I don't know if the S7800 can, seems unlikely though. Not had any problems with the charger pin on mine though, think it was 2.5mm or something? The S7300 and the GPD G5A both had the same one, I found a 2.5mm>USB cable which was rated @ 2a to use as the chargers supplied aren't great (and not UK 3pin).
Its just most of the tablets and offbrand phones I used with that pin, it got bent and never charged again.
Yeah I think the JXDs use the same generic charger as the chinatabs, I think from memory it's a bit thicker than the one on the S7300 I had but don't quote me on that. Like I said I never had any problems with mine on the JXD and GPD, funnily enough I had to reflow the solder on the charge port when I got the S7300 as it was damaged in transit but it was solid after that. Tbh you might get a better response over on the DIngoonity forums, there's a decent Android console subforum with an active JXD section and lots of people have the S7800. There's loads of information there about custom roms and lots of opinions about the overall quality.
Its funny because my old chinatab was a Dopo (Double Power) walmart 10 inch tablet. The port was a DC port with one of the small pin connectors and it snapped off the motherboard without any force. lol
I don't think it's been a problem with S7800 users, if you look on the relevant forums you'll get an idea of what shortcomings the various Android consoles have - they all have at least one problem ranging from small ( (dull screen on the GPD G5A) to unusable (overlapping buttons on the JXD S5800). You usually get lots of similar complaints but power jack issues aren't one I've seen come up really. You really need to check user reviews on these to get a good idea of them, you can never trust the manufacturers spec or QC and the resellers give little support so if you buy a dud you're screwed. If you can buy locally and pay with Paypal even better.
After some help and doing a bit of research online the GPD XD sounds rad. Looking at this one below : http://www.geekbuying.com/item/GPD-...S-1280-768-Game-Tablet-PC---Black-347651.html @Yakumo @lemmywinks will DC and N64 emulation really be at full speed on this? From videos I've watched of it and the previous model (the Q9) it seems emulation is great on both?
