I know this may be a stupid question, but:

Katamari Damacy was a game that was released everywhere except in Europe/UK. As such, if I wanted to play it I would require an import/chipped PS2. As I can't think of any other games that would be unavailable in the UK I would want, is it worth getting a 'special' PS2 just to play it - or are later games (such as We ♥ Katamari (PS2) or Beautiful Katamari (X360)) just as good?

We ♥ Katamari is indeed a great game. But it lacks the unlimited mode that made Damacy unique. And some other modes.
But as I said, We ♥ Katamari is a really great game and worth getting too/instead. Then when you played til your eyes bleed Damacy might be a good investment.

The first one is the best !

    We Love Katamari is ok

Beautiful Katamari for the 360 needs to be avoided, they drop the ball on this one.

Why? I've read people say it's just too similair or something.

The theme song is the god damned best song ever. 15 minutes of that won't make you crazy or anything.

Both katamaris for the ps2 are excellent, but the one i really recommend (if you have a psp) is Me & My Katamari which is sort of a rehash of the ps2 games (in terms of music).

I'm not fussed about getting a PSP - I like playing games jointly with other people and sharing the love. I suppose I could get hookups to TV, but what would be the point?

    They changed the game.

Before it was pick up X objects to make a Katamari X size, then you had bonus levels were collect X of "special" objects to create a Katamari.

The 360 version does away with that and just gives you the "bonus" levels. This is all well and good for the seasoned Katamari player but proves frustrating for those new to the series. Quite a few friends wondered what I smoking when they played the 360 version.

My review of it can be found here.

Katamari Damacy still has the BEST opening intro EVER !!!!

I own the soundtrack for it too can't get enough of it.

Ah, so it completely changes the whole idea. That sucks :( (except if you're a seasoned player, like you say).

The issue I have is that the Japanese theme song is ever so slightly better due to the inclusion of the game's name to make it slightly less random. I'm assuming, though, I'd have to get the NA version.

This man speaks the truth!

BTW mooseblaster, you could also use the swapmagic/hdloader approach to play it on a UK PS2.

The original Katamari Damacy is still the best, but honestly, you can get 99% of the experience with the other releases. I'm not sure which are available in Europe, but We ♥ Katamari is well worth getting, and I had plenty of fun with Me & My Katamari and Beautiful Katamari.

I don't think it's quite as bad as that... I went through the whole game just collecting whatever, and I still managed to meet all the objectives (except a few). What annoys me the most about Beautiful Katamari is the DLC whoring it does, where you're forced to pay MS points to unlock junk that is already on the disc. That crap pisses me off.
