I've taken a beautiful Dreamcast Dev Kit - Katana HKT-01 In the beginning as many kits when turned on: the screen was black! I read here all the instructions, bought the adaptec 2940 scsi card, terminators, a xp pc and reflashed the katana It works! The only problem is that when I putted at the beginning a GD rom (dreamcast game) the system stucked at the sega logo also I tried a cd and worked fine for the first 5 tracks then used to stop when opened the Kit to check and clean the gd rom player after done it read nothing, also I discovered the cd/gd spins on the opposite direction?! .. other than that it's perfect Any hint? Really appreciate Thanks Mak
Very strange, never had that. You could try to swap the GD drive assembly by one take of a Dreamcast. They are identical, the cables are just a little bit shorter on the dreamcast.
It sounds like your cleaning broke it but yeah a retail GD will just slot into the tray. Your original problem could have just needed the pot tweaking a fraction of a turn - t is quite rare for cleaning the drive actually solves a problem and as you have found out it can create problems too Out of interest is yours a true Dreamcast 5.24 or is it the older revision? I've only ever owned Set 4 and Set 5.24's but if you have a Set 5.16 or something with Katana on the front I guess it may be possible it has reduced compatibility with the usual Dreamcast features.
Guys, thanks for the interest first of all 1) About the swapping of a GD drive - I did it right now and.. The GD rom of the katana on a normal dreamcast WORKS perfectly!! Read GD games and normal cd's with no problem on the other side.. the GD rom drive of the normal dreamcast on the Katana spins BUT NOT read, spins as the other in the opposite direction as the other drive (I guess at this point it can be a problem of the internal boards?! dunno) I swapped also the ribbon cables and they ALL work perfect on the dreamcast 2) @Yakumo wrote "yours a true Dreamcast 5.24 or is it the older revision?" I don't know.. where I can check it to be sure about that? I've got the sdk r10 and r11 and reflash with it the whole system to be able to run the katana in game mode (and not emulation mode) but I don't know.. maybe you know more than me but I got the feeling that what you say is right.. if you have a way to let me have this set le me know so I can test it and email you back Mak
For the devkit version: Look at the sticker at the bottom of your devkit. You will see a serial number, something like: example of a 5.24 set: S524S0.... example of a 5.16 set: S516S0...
- spinning: never mind that, shouldn't be a problem. - on which number did you set the rotary switch on the front ? (I put it on '0' for Japanese games) - did you check if all the power cables were correctly attached ? - Which games are you launching / with which video cable ? (not all games support VGA for example)
Also are you using original GD-ROM or selfboot CD-R? The HKT-0120 doesn't natively support MIL-CD so won't boot anything other than original GD-ROM and GD-R. Lastly, I'm not Yakumo I'm only half scouse haha!
Thanks for the help guys @t_chan 1) Spins BUT not on the right direction (it goes opposite and I don't know why?!) 2) Usually is in 0 = japan, I also have USA titles and checked if changing the swtich in the proper setting (3/4 I don't remember) it would have worked No thing! The only thing I have been able to do with the ratary switch is to make a self test and see gives error when the system try to test the GD rom It is the only thing that goes red! even the aiwa thing about the midi interface is OKay soon as I found the proper interface! 3) house of the dead (JAP) and shen mue (jap), nfl 2k1 (usa) @legit Of course I am using ONLY original GD roms and in perfect conditions .. I think the problem is in that the GD drive spins on the wrong direction and this doens't make possible to the lens to read correclty.. Mak
Try this: Put a GD-Rom in the tray, close the tray, and wait for the disc to spin. Then, while it is spinning, open the GD-Rom tray: 1) when the power is OFF, and 2) when the power is ON If I do that, I get following result: 1) the GD-ROM turns in the normal direction 2) same as 1, but then there is a quick stop (brake), and the GD-Rom turns in the opposite direction You mean this ? Don't worry, I have that too, I think the test just needs a special GD-Rom to pass.
