Hey guys, twice tonight my keyboard froze and I got this continous beep from the motherboard. Any open programs fail to respond until I hit the killswitch and force a shut down, whereupon the computer shuts down fine. The mouse still works.

The beep sounds more like multiple beeps very close together. Is this just a faulty keyboard or symptoms of a bigger problem?

    Any advice would help.

    I'm assuming it's a usb keyboard?

Years ago I had a similar problem and it turned out the connection in the back of the computer was shot. But it was the old round pin connections, can't think of the "technical" term right this second. And that computer was complete junk from day one. But if this is a USB one, that story doesn't help at all.

The quick beeping sound reminds me of when you hold down a key on your comp, making your pc beep. Maybe the keyboards funked out to where it thinks your holding a button. It sound's to me like it's the keyboard itself, but check out another on to see, try a usb and ps/2 one and see if the prob repeats itself.

Hook up a different keyboard to see if it will still give you problems. Are the beeps from the inner PC speaker or from the speakers hooked up to your sound card?

you need to tell us exactly how much beep you hear in a row, those beeps are like codes that tell you wants going on with your pc. One quick beep is fine, but if you hear anything else, then something's not right. I dont know what kind of beep and sequence stands for by heart though.

All i can say is that i doubt its a keyboard problem. Try to unplug it, and restart you pc. Lets see if you hear the same Beeps.

Maybe one of the keys is stuck, had that problem, too. Or it might just be dirty and needs some cleaning. Try another keyboard fro mthe same typ and should know if it is a keyboard problem or something else. If it aint too expensive just get a new one.

Yeah, it's that long beep where like a key is stuck. The sound comes from the inner PC speaker. The keyboard is the kind with the round connector, so gaming247's theory is problably right.

Thanks guys. I just get a little paranoid whenever anything goes wrong with my computer.

Don't just pass it off as a "simple" problem as just a keyboard going bad. Chances are good that it may just be a short within the keyboard itselft that makes it send a key signal repeatedly (keyboard buffer overflow). However, you might want to doublecheck that all the fans (CPU and GPU fans included) are working right as you may be having overheating problems too.

would'nt having overheating issues, atomatically shut down the computer? or is that feature only in newer pc's, also, i think the term is a PS2 connecter

Really, anything can happen when you get overheating. Sometimes the CPU will slow or stop completely, other times the motherboard will lose bus access, etc.

hmmm really?! i never knew that, Ive heard that running a comp with no fans/heat sinks or whatever on the cpu, will burn it out in a matter of seconds...Hawanja, try a usb keyboard, maybe reset the values in the bios?.. throw it out the window?

Got a USB keyboard, no crazy wierdness anymore. I doubt it's my CPU overheating, all the fans are working. It did blow all the dust out to be sure.

    Thanks guys.
